oops! i though i had it fixed. it look like the locks up coming back after play games for like an hour or so.
anybody actually got it fixed? please help!! -
There is something physically wrong with some of these refurbs. If you have had it less than 90 days, call seneca data and tell them of your issues. Matter of fact if you want PM me and I will give you the guys direct line.
He will setup a return/exchange. If you look in tigerdirect you will see that is has the following warranty:
Limited Warranty
This Item's Warranty is:
- 3 Months Parts
- 3 Months Labor
Warranty provided by
- Gateway Renovation Group
- View Warranty Info
So, either they fix it or give you a new one. What I would suggest is start the return process with Seneca/TigerDirect, this gives you a 30 day RMA. Don't do a exchange.
Then go to www.slickdeals.net and setup a "Deal Alert" for "Gateway" and "p-7811" and "p-7811fx" so that it will e-mail you as soon as a post with these keywords are posted.
Then, you use your current P-7811fx until you actually receive your other one. Then using the two laptops, piece the best one (pick the best screen, keyboard, touchpad etc). And send the other one back. I wouldn't suggest swapping the CPU's as the one I had had a serial number attached to it, not sure if they actually log this info or not, but worth noting. Also, don't forget to use the live.com cashback for 10% off (75bucks!).
If you setup a exchange with them, you don't get priority (trust me, I tried) anyway, and you can't get the cashback.
I did the above, and received my second one which had a piece of crap screen, and a sticky keyboard but a working gpu/motherboard. Swapped the screen and keyboard, and sent them back the really fubard laptop (freezing, sticky keyboard, screen from hell).
I'm sure they will just sell that thing to another poor soul tooDon't settle for your faulty machine, that is what they are counting on, these need to be actually REFURBISHED, and not repacked and reshipped.

Hi!
I never had a problem with lockups/freeze until around the time i added my 2nd hdd (WD 320GB 7200). It locks up/stutters/freezes momentarily ALL the time, whether i'm gaming or not. I just upgraded to the latest nvida drivers (179.48) an physx. The resolution i run is 1444x900, but i noticed when i installed the new nvidia drivers, it recommended to run at the native 1920x1200... Does anyone think this could be a factor as well? I should probably note also that 75% of the time, my notebook is on my lap, so that could be causing some vent problems. It was never a problem before now, but does anyon else use it on their lap a lot?
@E-Wrecked: I seem to be having he same trouble you were having in terms of how the machine was behaving. Did you ever figure out the problem or did they give you a new one? I've had my p-7811fx since august or so, so i can't do the 14-day return. I did, however buy the 3-year warranty. If i turn it in to them to get fixed, and they have to give me a replacement, does that void the rest of the term of my warranty, or is it a freebie if it's considered defective? (The salesman told me if you had your entire machine replaced, they would only do that one time....

things i've still yet to try:
-blowin the dust out of the vents. (i tried just blowing on it with my mouth but no dust came out... i'm buyin an air duster tomorrow.)
-I'm going to download some thermal monitoring stuff to test my temps. ( i downloading a bunch of "right mark" software for analyizing all kinds of stuff, but i haven't tried any of it yet.)
-i just got acronis true image, so after successfully image my drive, i'll try a clean install... (any general tips for this would be greatly appreciated, related to partitions and what not.)

I should also mention what happens when my machine "hangs":
-the mouse/screen freezes
-if there is audio playing, it stutters like "neo" from the when he's rescued from the matrix.. = )
Also important to mention i'm not finding any record of this around the same time it happens in the event viewer. Maybe i'm not looking in the right place (i'm looking at custom views/administrative views) -
I know this is an older thread but I didn't want to start a brand new one when people have had these issues in the past.
I bought my laptop on 9/27/08. I've had small issues here and there that I won't go into now since I think they were resolved back in November.
Two nights ago I have a new problem.
I was playing WoW and running an A&E program on my dual monitor. I'd forgotten to plug in the AC Adapter and the computer went black and shut down (presumably because the battery died).
I plugged the adapter back in, rebooted the computer (got one of the 'shut down unexpectedly' errors and had me restart it regularly or in Safe Mode - I chose regularly).
I decided not to bother playing WoW at that time but rebooted my A&E program.
I started having issues.
A&E would freeze up. It wouldn't let me close, minimize, or open any other documents. It was just frozen.
After about 15 mins I forced a reboot.
Ever since then I've had continual lockups and freeze-ups. It doesn't matter what Internet page I choose- it locks up. When I try to look at the battery by scrolling over the icon, it locks up. When I do 2 things at once (i.e. look at one program and try opening a google net page) it locks up. It seems to happen regularly every 5 minutes or so.
Most of the time when I try "testing/forcing" the issue to see if it does it again--I find that the computer locks up trying to run WoW. But at other times, I noticed it when I was completely void of internet access and was transferring files from my laptop to my external drive incase I had to do an OS re-install or take it back to Best Buy (which I kind of dread doing since it takes so long to get it back and usually I get a pat on the head and the 'you don't know what you're talking about' speeches).
The hard drive makes noise like it's doing something, but it doesn't actually do anything. One time I clicked "esc" during the lockup and the screen just went black (doesn't happen every time). The disk light blinks like it's "working" but it just doesn't "do anything". The battery light is a combination of blue and red (it looks purplish next to the battery icon).
I don't know what the issue is. I have tried to update Windows Updates to see if that helps, but the laptop still locks up and doesn't complete an update.
Someone suggested I run the computer in Safe Mode to see if I can get the lock ups to happen there but so far I haven't had an issue-- but it also can't connect to the Internet so I have a harder time trying to force a lockup more quickly. Though browsing around folders, iTunes, etc-- it didn't lock up.
I don't really know what that means or how to fix it.
It seems like this issue came from the battery drain and shut down of the laptop but I am clueless as to how I can fix it.
Will downloading drivers to another computer and xferring them onto the P-7811FX work? Do I need to try and do something else?
I've tried all I can as a non-"techie" person and I don't know where to go from here--- besides....Best Buy.
P-7811FX hangs / lockups
