I have a P-7811fx and I have the same issues as everyone else, crashing when playing video games when playing on cord, also now crashing when idling and on cord, everything is fine on battery. But clock speeds are diminished on battery so performance is lower. So far i got by on riva tuner's force performance 3D but that just forces 3rd power profile which is same as running on battery = lower performance.

    My Bios is 9c.23.00

I have looked around and people are talking about downgrading bios to 9c.17.00 and undervolting to 0.9v. These posts are old, so I am afraid to try all that, can someone confirm some kind of fix to the whole issue that does not involve changing clock speeds or using rivatuner at all?

Asking for official support is a waste of time, as gateway support is utterly incompetent and Nvidia support is more polite but equally incompetent.

    -edit-
    symptoms of the crash:
screen and sound turn off, fan turns off shortly after, LEDs are still on. nothing is responsive

This particular issue has nothing to do with overheating. Don't get me wrong this laptop still gets overheating issues, but those can be solved with regular maintenance, no this is something serious and everyone seems to experience it and gateway doesn't want to admit its flawed product.

The reason why I think this is a voltage issue is because the crashes only occur on battery mode, which lowers the voltage to 0.9v and reduces clock speeds as well. Simply underclocking does not solve this problem.

    -edit-

can someone explain why do people downgrade to 9c.17.00 bios?

Someone is bound to ask what "crash" means. Do you blue screen or does it just cut power or lock up?

Also what is your heat situation.

If you are crashing at idle, I think bios/undervolt is not your answer.

It looks like you are on the right track. I have not taken either of these actions yet. I have reflashed my BIOS with the latest version of 9C.23.00. The Gateway support site uses a filename of "...9C.23.00_A_A" which might indicate minor changes. However, after I reflashed checked the release date and it had not changed from the release of "9C.23.00" I originally had loaded. Also, their may be issues between Windows Vista and Windows 7/8. "9C.17.00" was targeted to Windows Vista. I am not sure if there are issues with using that for Windows 7/8. It has only been a short time since I reflashed earlier today with the latest download of "9C.23.00" from Gateway; but so far I am running okay for about three hours without loss of video, having to reboot. I would sure like to know what you have done in the meantime.

I did a search on this site for "09.17.00 P-78" and got many hits. I also posted to YouTube.
