That looks cool, I wonder though why they went back down to 3 gigs of ram?? Blu-Ray is very nice though.

    Any idea on price?

T9400 is sweet deal but paying extra for something useless like Blueray sucks
and having 1GB less memory sucks as well. Also hard drive is 5400 rpm, but maybe it's going to even out because it's more capacity so it has less search time I dunno.

I don't think Blu-Ray is a waste, you'll be able to watch full-HD movies on your WUXGA screen, and of course the HDMI will hook up to nearly any HDTV. That huge screen resolution is almost worth it MORE for HD Movies than for gaming... Movies don't drop in FPS if you turn on too many settings to High ;)

As I posted in your other thread jhuggs (you shouldnt double post!)

This was posted two days ago when the specs were first released. Some think its a japanese only release. No one wants it anyway, the useless blu-ray itself adds about $300 to the price.

.......why do people keep saying it's a waste? If you don't like it, that's no problem, no need to buy this laptop, there is the 7811 that should suit your needs just fine. I actually assume that the only reason the processor is upgraded is because Blu-Ray needs at least a 2.4Ghz Core2duo or something like that.

If you don't need Blu-Ray, then whatever, move along, this laptop isn't for you

this is a Japanese only model, they probably install it with x86 vista thats why the 3gb ram, you will not see this laptop in the states.
the reason for the blue ray is that Japanese people dig it and are willing to pay for it.

Everyone can post their own opinion, and don't assume that subjective posts are intended to be anymore than that - an opinion. If people only posted positives about laptops, these wouldn't be very good forums. So no need to say "move-along" to someone who is pointing out something that MANY will see as a downside.

Yea... If everyone just moved along when they saw something they don't like, the product would get no negative feedback and hence will not be improved upon, even though it is not perfect.

So no, don't just move on; your criticism is welcomed, by both the other users, and by the manufacturers themselves.

Largely moot though, as this product probably won't see the shores of whichever countries the users posting in this thread live in.

Well my point I was making was that this laptop is obviously directed towards a bit of a different crowd, (japanese obviously), haha, but still more towards the entertainment movie-watching group. Gateway isn't going to try and improve this laptop for gamers, it's not directed towards gamers as much as Blu-Ray watching. You don't go into a budget laptop thread and say "pfft, where's the 9800m GTX?", do you?

But yes, it's your opinion and feel free to express it.

No, but it doesn't make sense for the 7811 to be a gaming laptop and then 7812 (higher model number) to be a media laptop (I agree with you that it probably is though). So in that sense hopefully you can understand why I complain. I guess just bad model numbering by gateway. It's not fun to see a higher model number go in and be like YESSSS BETTER PROCESSOR, oh but damn, less ram, but YESS INCREASED HDD!, but damn, less rpms, but YESSS BLUETOOTH AND ITS 2.1!, but damn, forced to pay for blu-ray... etc

Japanese aren't huge PC gamers, they are obsessed
about their consoles like Sony, Blueray and PS 3 and Wii and also arcade.

BTW I think P8400 is capable of running blue ray @ WUXGA.
There are PC's out there that have Blue ray drive and worse processor.

If the video card has hardware acceleration for blu-ray and the application has support for said hardware accel, then yes. The vid card plays a big role. However, this is not the case on older laptops and even some newer ones. Thus a beefy CPU is needed for software rendering. Although a C2D 2.4 is certainly not the minimum spec.

I REALLY would not be expecting numbering schemes to make sense...
I think they just roll 4 dice, and come up with a model number!!!

Either way we look at that new model. We know its built on same motherboard. So we can 100 percent be sure that we can upgrade our p-7811 to T9400 and it will work fine and still have 4 gig of ddr3 :). As for blue ray, i wouldn't use it on laptop. Wear and tear on notebooks happen too fast. I would just stream it from my desktop and servers at home and play it via notebook or use HDMI from notebook and transfer to other TVs in home that are away from my main system.

Still have to find a way to convert HDMI to other connection like Component or S video without spending way too much money on it. (any advice on that) sure will appreciate it.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/VGA-to-S-Video-RCA-Adaptor/dp/B000P3UB24

There's no point converting HDMI to composite or s-video as they don't support HD resolutions. In your situation you might as well use the VGA port and a simple converter lead as above. The only time you would convert HDMI is if you were going to component really.

So... HDMI to anything but component is pointless. VGA to S-Video works.. would the screen resolution even be worth it for me to put it on my 54 inch big screen?

It's a bit older, think it only supports like 525p with component connections.
It's like $150 bucks to go from HDMI to component video, and I just didn't see the point in doing so for 525p.

But for a $5 VGA-S-Video cable it might be worth it, unless the resolution would just be terrible.

Depends how far you sit from your screen really. If you sit right in front of it you will really notice the low res. If you sit a fair distance away however s-video will be fine.
