Heres my issue if anyone can chime in that would be great
I have had a P-7811fx since last year october and had the lockup that as been disscussed I could not except the fact of this know defective nvida chipset and gateway telling me that there was no issue so I sent it back for repair After many excuses and 6 times of sending the P-7811fx back and 4 months of disscussions and crap from gateway the problem was fixed (or it seems to be) at first they did crap and upgraded drivers after 3 times of getting it back they decided to replace the mobo (that had a 9800 1 gig instead of 512) after that 2 hard drives and the moniter cover (top of the laptop was replaced) due to the damage they did in mobo replacment and now finally the lockup seems to be fixed they have told me for my troubles that they will give me a refurb p-7908u to replace my p-7811fx and Im considering it because I fear the lock up returning If I do get the 7908u It lacks the higher res screen 1440-900 vs 1920-1200 and the 7200 rpm drive (although i think I can talk them into keepin my drive instead of the 500 5400rpm that comes with it) I gain a 260m and do have a little more faith in that chip over the 9800 due to my previous experience and 2.53 in place of 2.26 proc I wonder if anyone else has had any issues with the 7908u and if the moniter downgrade is worth the graphic and proc upgrade (and hopefully an upgrade in stablity ) I have to make this choice today and was hoping I get get any opnion you folks might have on the situation

    any input would be appreciated

    thanks

Did you ask them if they can put your 1920x1200 screen on the 7908 ?

Just as a note... the 500gb hard drive is quieter and faster due to higher density disks and slower rpms.

The screen is a con for some, if it ever really becomes a huge issue you can buy one for 170$ish but quite frankly the 1440x900 monitor is very good except for HD playback which doesn't look as sharp as it would on a wuxga monitor.

As for gaming, the 260 has a bit more power than the 9800. IMO 1440x900 with high fps and AA 4/8x looks better than 1920x1200 with no AA at any fps.

I was kind of on the same boat, but it was choosing whether to buy this laptop. Just get it, if you really want to get a higher res upgrade the lcd or get a monitor. I just wanted to know if the p-7908 can support quad and it is still my buying point if it can or can't, nobody knows the true answer either.

Yes I did they said somthing about a converter not being compatible
(I wonder if they are just talking crap to keep from losing the only thing of value on a p-7811fx that they would be taking back to try to resell)

Well I have the 7808u, and I have not had a single problem since when I bought it (March '09). Cpu and GPU undervolt beautifully, and I still get 3h 15min's~30min's battery life. I honestly have not had a single problem since buying it.

Tell them to disassemble the screen and try to fix it onto the 7908u before you.

    See if they're lying. :p
