My friend instaleed Vista x64 on it and he's having some problems.
    1. He still has one unknown device in device manager.
    2. He's having a sound problem. Like I already had on my C90S. The default Vista drivers is conflicting between the headphones & SPIDF so he's not getting sound under headpones. We couldn't find the name of the sound chipset so....

    Thanks guys!

The sound chipset is IDT High Definition Audio I believe atleast thats the drivers that I found and used with my Vista 64bit install and that one unknown device is more than likely the modem Agere HDA Modem because that was the problem I was having with the unknown device and then I discovered that it was the modem I had to manually install the driver to get it to work though and it installed fine.I used the most recent modem driver on the Gateway support site. Well I hope this helps.

The sound driver is on Gateway's website. The Agere Modem Driver is not. You will have to install it the old fashioned way. You will have to go into install the device and pick from a list. The Agere Modem will be in the list and when you select it, it will say this may not be for that device etcc.., just use it anyways and said device will now be installed and you are good to go.

There is a new modem driver on Gateway's support site but you will have to extract it and install it manually for it to install properly.Go here for the newest modem driver create a folder on your desktop, right click on the file and extract the contents to the folder that you created and go into your device manager and manually install the driver for Agere HDA Modem.when installing you will get an error message as Rawidema mentioned above ignore it and install anyways and you should be fine.I passed this on to Rawidema a few days ago.I hope this helps.

Flamarc, that is the driver I downloaded as well, but unfortunately it only houses the 32 bit driver even though the website says othewise. After doing an extensive search on these drivers for x64, all of the drivers for this modem for Vista x64 have the number 64 in the files where as the 32 bit version do not. Once you extract the ones from Gateway's website, you will find they do not have the 64 numbers in the file names. I had to find the file some other place. It took me a bit to find it and once I did it still didn't install correctly and I had to manually do it as we've mentioned before.

Seems like with a little effort/elbow grease, Vista 64 can be installed. I have a copy of Vista Business 64 that is waiting to be installed along with a new 7200 rpm HD that I ordered recently. During the wait though, I'm wondering if it's worth the trouble to reinstall everything. Is there a noticable increase in performance? I'd like to know if there is any other benefit to seeing the 4GB of ram I installed.

Well, other than seeing 4GB or more of memory, the applications I use don't really indicate much of a speed increase that is noticeable. It depends on what you might use your computer for. But, no, just switching to x64 itself is not going to change the feel of the laptop speedwise.

Well that is the driver that I used and after extraction I manually installed it and thats how I got mine to work. I also used some of the 32 bit drivers for Vista depending on what it is for some of the 32 bit drivers will install on 64bit Vista. I did this with my Toshiba Satellite when I installed 64 bit Vista I was able to install all of the hardware that was missing from using the 32 bit driver cd that came with the computer. But I also use Vista SP1 and I am not sure if that made any difference or not. ;)

Yes I do not think 64 bit Vista will make much of a difference speed and performance wise. However some games that have a 64 bit version will look and run better.I read on here that one of the other forum members stated that Crysis 64 bit did not run so hot.Now with my experience HL2 and HL2Episode One 64 bit versions looked and played very well for me and I am able to max out all of my games except Crysis of course. I can run Crysis on all high with AA off at 1440x900 resolution.but never the less I suppose the benefits of 64 bit really comes down to personal preference and how well the applications and/or games that you are running performs under that version of Vista. :)

Yes I forgot about that eventually there will be several programs that are designed to specifically run on 64 bit OS. Also I hope that everyone who is still in love with XP knows that soon Microsoft will not support that version of Windows . They will expect that most everyone would have or will be adopting the Vista OS. :p

Yeah, I hear you. I am having a devil of a time finding audio drivers that work in XP Pro X64. I have tried at least a dozen. I miss AC'97.

Man the 6831fx runs XP so amazingly well. 4GB of RAM and 3.5 GB free RAM!!!

Yeah, I gave up. Installed Vista 64 and spent a little while tweaking. Vista uses 1.2 GB of physical RAM after boot - twice what XP Pro X64 uses.
