i seriously have a question that i'm not sure if anyone else can relate to
ok so recently i installed crysis and GOW and i set ma settings on high with a dropped resolution to 1280*768 and they play fine - almost perfect actually

my problem is that after playing this game for half hour or so the laptop shuts off.. let me repeat - the game doesn't just close, the laptop SHUTS OFF and then restarts into safe mode. funny thing is this doesn't happen in Halo2, Unreal 3 or any of the other games i have

does this happen to anyone else? if so then can someone plz help me out with a solution?

also - how do i reduce the amount of shared mem used by the laptop?

    thanks in advance

Sounds like a heat related issue, are you overclocking your GPU? If not, you could have an issue with your cooling system being defective :(

well yeah it was overclocked but i performed the stress test for an hour and it never went above 77 degrees. and it went without an itch so i really never saw a problem with that.

well i dropped the settings back and now its all cool

anyway - can anyone tell me how to drop some of the excess shared memory? i want to drop it from 1.2GB to around 512MB. i hear that i need to go into the BIOS settings and change it but i don't see anything about that

When your computer's booting and it says gateway with the moo cube on the screen, press f2. That's where the BIOS menu is.

dude - i know how to get to the bios screen, i'm not that much of a noob but what i don't see is where in bios does it say that you can alter the amount of shared memory that the graphics card consumes..

and i ask my question again since it has not been answered.. does anyone know where to go to alter the the amount of shared graphics memory?
    thanks in advance

I believe Gateway has locked the Bios on this machine and we cannot make any changes except the ones that show up as far as boot options, security and you can also restore it to factory defaults. However outside of those few categories I don't think we are able to make any type of changes.

mines dping the same thing with no overclocking. I got the display and its ****ed. the *******s unloaded ever driver on the thing and on top of that, they put a ton of extra bloatware on it. worst deal ever.

I figured out why its getting hot. If I put it on a table it doesn't get the least bit hot. I'm use to having my laptop...in my lap. This, however is to heavy a videocard to be sitting in a place with low ventilation. just food for thought if you're having the same issue.

just don't block the vents and you should be okay. Let the computer rest once in a while too.

I sometimes have my laptop on my lap for a long period of time too... I looked on the gateway support site for the picture of the bottom... it looks like there's really no way to put it on one's lap without blocking that vent?

I guess I can try to balance it on one leg so that the left and right vent are not blocked... but that might be too much of a pain.

Were you playing games on there, or doing non gaming that caused it to make it get too hot?

    Found picture here.

mine gets hot just playing on the net. I'm on my for 10 or more hours a day too, but this thing is entirely too hot for my taste. I had a vgn-n220e vaio before that was cold to the touch after leaving it on for days. My wife worked nights at one juncture and would play on it when I was sleeping and it would run 48 hours at a time and stay cool. this thing is burning hot sitting in my lap. Now, if I move to a desk its fine but I could have spent far less money on a desktop too that did far more. In fact, the fx desktop is only 1000 and has a 6600 quad in it. I'm going to return this thing and find something cooler I think. the palm rests are causing my hands to get too sticky too, thats annoying too.
