All of these idea's are interesting and I've heard good things about the NC2000 cooler but, most of this stuff is not what some people would call portable. So barring overclocking, does anyone here really have a serious problem with overheating? I'm just curious because I have not yet encountered this (on my P6860) and all of the items mentioned decrease the laptops portability which is what a laptop is supposed to be all about.

nah, not really seanno... more of a novelty for me. :D

technically.... all you have to do is lift the laptop about 3/4 of an inch in back for more fan ventilation and all is well.

Thanks, I was just curious with all of these methods mentioned if people really were having issues. When I installed the T9300 in my P6860 one of the ways that I torture tested it was to run 3dmark06 in a continuos loop for like 12 hours and the heat really was'nt bad at all.
    Thanks

usually people have real temp issues if the heat sinks or vents are clogged or blocked. then the temps really start to soar.

I am currious, has anyone paid any attention to the direction of the air flow with some of these coolers? I have been looking at quiet a few online and most show that the fans are setup to remove air from the bottom of the laptop. With our laptops, we need to have air pushed towards the bottom to feed air into it. I have been using the side of one of my old computer cases to keep my laptop on, which does good when I use it, but a couple of fans would do it wonders. I havnt found any coolers that I like yet or that I think would work ideally with the 6xxx series of laptops. What we need is air intakes on the front and right hand side of the laptop, with exasust in the rear corners and front middle. I think I am going to work on my own, I have a ton of old cases that would make great donnor aluminum for a project like this. :D

yeah, going to have to see a picture of that... because it needs 3 fans pushing air through the bottom of the laptop to force more air through the bottom vents. not so sure about that front and right hand stuff.

The reasoning for needing air intakes on the front and right is because the exhaust on the laptop is in the rear and left side of the laptop, if you have the intakes there, then it will draw that hot air back inside and wont be as efficient. I will get some pictures when I am done. Also the fans do not have to be directly under the laptops intake areas, the air simply needs to be channeled there.

rhino ferret exhaust notebook cooler.... bites the dust. it does not clip on well with the slanted vents. and it does not cool gpu or cpu down..... probably works better if you put laptop in standby mode with your usb ports still active. (not sure how that would help any of us)

But this laptop has an exhaust at the back of it; wouldn't that mean you'd be redirecting heated air back towards the laptop?
I guess I'll just go with hte idea of the rubbery thing.

The CPU exhaust is on the rear right edge and the GPU exhaust is on the left side. The Cooler Master NotePal intake is centred on the rear so it works really well and doesn't recycle hot air.

    So that aside,

The intakes are at the top-and-bottom end of my laptop's back; so the middle for me isn't important. And since the top ones are by the exhausts they are of lesser priority than the intakes on the opposite ends from the exhausts. Am I getting this right?

So I need a laptop cooler with fans on its lower end(higher priority) and top ends (lower priority).
The ZM-NC2000, despite the hype seems to atleast covers the bottom-intakes.

Cooler Master Notepal Infinite, does that too and covers even more ground with some tunnelling system.

Both models don't really have a fan directly under the intakes; they fans at one end, and the vents on the elsewhere.
Maybe I should get the cooler master and plug the center area to make the venting at the top and bottom stronger.

The infinite covers more ground and has its tunneling, but the Zalman one has two fans. I can't decide. damn this mental diarrhea! xD

I use one I got at Radioshack for 15$

It slides closed or open for storage and diffrent sized notebooks. I played Tabula Rasa on highest for 6 hours and temp never went over 47c. also it conviently runs off USB and the cord store inside.

It also has adjustment to angle your laptop in the back. When I get home from work I will check what brand it was.

I've got the NZXT Cryo - Black, it's great and is about 0.5 inches bigger at right and left side. The only issue I've found, it's that my WD my passport HDD is not working with the cooler usb hub, I believe because it doesn't have enough power even using two USB ports  But anyway I use the third usb port for the WD HDD. I've used to play Gears of Wars without any cooler and it was very hot but now it's ok. About the noise? mmm... no issues, even high. The cooler matches with the latpop  (great looking)

    Gateway 6860FX 1.83GHZ... etc
