I am a total newbie here and was wondering if I could get some help with upgrading my ram. I am currently running vista x64 ultimate, and I bought a 2gb stick of ram today (kingston KTD-INSP6000B/2GB) from a local computer shop. Vista is recognising the ram but when I ran the vista score it is still rating my memory at 4.5, shouldnt there be some difference in the scores with 3gb compared to 4gb? Is the ram just cheap or do I need to do something else? I would like to know what the best ram available for this laptop is and will it make any difference then what I currently have? ALL SUGGESTIONS are greatly appreciated, I am learning a ton from this great forum!

ps. would this work for my laptop? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=350073708920&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=022 :D

Ha! Vista rating. Might as well consult a horoscope. I hear Ms. Cleo is still talking calls.

It measures the lowest score, not the highest.

In the Sub Scores, is the memory the lowest?

YES, THAT IS MY LOWEST SCORE (MEMORY) One would think that an extra gig would do something. So everyone running vista 64 with the p6831fx the best windows score they have for memory is 4.5 with 4gb?

    nope.
upgrading your cpu may bump your memory score up to 5.1 (anyone more?)

adding extra giga has no effect and since the bios does not support higher bus speeds than the default you cannot take advantage of higher spec RAM.

I'm getting 5.1 on my P-6831FX, w/the memory being the slowest.

    I'm running G.Skill 4 gb DDR2 667 PC2-5300 CL4-4-4-12 memory, w/the 64 bit version of Vista Home Premium.

Is it better to buy 4gb of all the same kind of memory or could I buy a 2gb stick to replace the 1gb in there already? Also, do you have to be running vista 64bit to use the hyperX memory? It says its 64bit...

Also, I know the bus speed is 667 stock...if you go to a T9300 with a 800mhz fsb does that mean you can run 800mhz memory? Or better yet can you put in 800mhz memeory with the T5450?

you can replace the 1gb with 2gb of the same samsung memory you already have. that would most cost effective.

hyperx memory ? not sure what you talking about. anyway x86 only see a bit more than 3gb so if you want to use all the 4gb you need to upgrade to x64 os.

no matter what you'll do your ram speed will stay 667mhz it a chipset limitation, so if you'll put 800mhz ram it will down clock to 667mhz, dont waste your money.

the chipset in the P-6831/6860's are limited to a FSB speed of 667 mhz. Intel designed it this way. You can run 800mhz memory (ddr2) but it will downclock to 667mhz. its not a bios limitation.

and my WEI score is 5.1 with CL-5 Kingston memory. but WEI is a **** poor benchmark.

Alright thanks. I was talking about Kingston HyperX DDR2 memory, sorry.

Will I have to change anything if I buy the 64bit version of vista? Or will the drivers find themselves in windows update (excluding graphics)?

Even with the T9300 you have...I thought that was 800mhz fsb?

yes, even with a T9300. the processor FSB is 800mhz, but with the memory, the chipset limits it to 667mhz

I have a T9300 in my 6831 and bumped up my score to an even 5 in the Ram numbers, and that's the only upgrade I made.I am currently using Vista 32.
    Hope that helps.
