I just got a P6860 FX the other day and I absolutely love it.

I can get Crysis running very nicely...and oblivion at perfect quality.

I also picked up a copy of Gears of War....unfortunately after I installed it, I booted it up. And right in the menu I got a message that said

"gears of war has stopped working"

I unstalled, and re installed it. I just kept getting the same message over and over again. I can't figure out what's going wrong.

Why is this? It isn't a problem with the graphics card, well...because it crashed in the menu. I doubt the menu was too much for it to handle.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems? How can I fix this, i know there has got to be a way.

    Thanks for the help

Goto laptopvideo2go.com , find the nvidia driver you want, pick the right operating system, download...

I have this same exact problem, and I can tell you it's an issue with the GAME, not your laptop or drivers. I bought Gears of War to showcase my P-171XL FX, and it played gloriously until I installed Service Pack 1 for my Vista 32-bit install. Now I get "Startup Application has stopped working" and "Gears of War has stopped working" errors every time I try to run it, and the endless research I've done into this problem has lead me to this conclusion: GEARS OF WAR FOR WINDOWS IS A HORRIBLE, BADLY PORTED, BUGGY PIECE OF GARBAGE. If you visit gearsforums.epicgames.com you'll find plenty of people with similar problems and no solutions that work, and apparently EPIC is unsympathetic and unlikely to ever release another patch for it.

(if you can't tell i'm still a little steamed about it)

Service Pack 1 eh? but that would mean pretty much everyone who using vista wouldn't be able to run this game. but that is apparently not the case. i wonder if there is something else hapening here, could be a combination of things

Sorry predator, but if the thread I found was the one you're referring to, I believe this is a different problem, unrelated to drivers or games for windows live. I'd love to be proven wrong tho!

I had the same problem in the past on my desktop with Shadow Run (crappy game), microsoft support was useless. I ended up reformatting, reloading vista, and it worked fine, I just wanted to fix it, not play it, funny.

So it's looking like the best option would just to be to return GoW? Dangit...Gamestop doesn't buy back games for much.

If it is a problem with SP1 (and I truly believe it is, just do a search to find out how many problems that "service pack" creates), how is that a Gears of War (EPIC's) fault? I had this same problem when I had vista installed; I bought this game, had it running and working fine. Then, like the other schmucks, I installed SP1 thinking it would make things better, and guess what, more problems, and no GoW. Formatted, installed Vista again, and no SP1 this time = problem fixed.

SP1 problem = Microsoft Problem = They suck; not Epic's Fault. Yeah, the game could have been ported better, but it does work, and it looks great, and in most cases, it plays fine too. Some minor bugs, and the few patches there have been have fixed most of them.

I highly dubt it is a SP1 issue, it really souds like a video driver problem, or just a dang vista problem.

    Hi,

Quick question: The instructions above are the latest driver's for the FX 6860's 8800m 512 mb running on the 64 bit version, correct? Just wanted to clarify this before I wreck my laptop.

    Thanks.

EDIT: sorry i meant to quote the list of instructions linked to the other thread.

Yes if you goto the link pick the 175.63, everyone has had good luck with that one, I am using the 175.80, make sure you pick Vista 64bit, or what ever your os is. P.S. It will not wreck your system, worst case you reload the original drivers.

No its from gears of war, it even says in small letters on the bottom of the sticker...

I was just about to say that its ironic that theres a GoW sticker on the laptop lol...

but yeah, GoW pc is buggy as hell, I got it for my desktop (quadcore/8800gtx) and it didn't run well so I haven't bothered installing it on the fx...

Its a very bad port, theres problems mainly with stuttering.....I don't know if there are new patches or something but 2 months ago when I got it, it was unplayable.

    Google

"gears of war has stopped working, error" and you will get A WHOLE LOT of results. It turns out that it's a bug on Epics side of things. It has to do with the Autorun, I don't know why, but it is.

When I run it in autorun it crashes 30 seconds or so into the game.

If I go to program files and start it up in the binary folder I was able to get a few hours of gameplay out of it before it crashed.

it's a shame there is a GoW sticker on the P6860, imagine how cool it would be to have a crysis or CoD4 sticker on there

I had problems running Crysis Warhead on my P6860 FX until I upgraded to a T9300 CPU. Big difference, games run smoothly. Got it used on eBay for $180.00. Made the laptop a real gamer and internet is faster.
