Dear P6860fx users,
I just recently installed Win7 Ultimate x64 on my laptop. Everything seems to work smooth with drivers and stuff. However, as i noticed, win7 does not work faster, at least on my machine, than e.g. vista or xp.
On a related matter, i may be wrong, but i noticed that the temps on win7 run even higher than on vista...
I guess my question then is what your win7 experience is like and what benefits in win7 do you see as opposed to vista/xp?!
Apart from that, when using win7, is you laptop running hotter the way mine does?
Really appreciate the help.

You got me. I can only offer anecdotal input that my experience on the P6860FX since upgrading "feels" better and more stable. I have not noticed temps, yet. But I generally sit mine on a desk and use it in a desktop-like setup, connected to mouse, keyboard, monitor and speakers. Most of the advantages that I have seen are organizational. With the enhancements that MS made to the desktop interface, I am able to stay more organized, and therefore more productive when I am working on it.
But as far as actually having run benchmarks before and after the upgrade? No, I have not done that. I can also say that the initial analysis run of a video file that PCs do when you are getting ready to encode them, is faster. Most of the times, it is able to do it in 11 to 13 seconds. Encoding is slightly faster, but not by much.
There is no way I would willingly go back to Vista on it, though; I can say that much.

I have noticed the rise in temps (but by a mere 2 C) but I feel it is only Windows 7 eye candy since it is a bit more than Vista. Not only that, windows 7 graphics drivers are still pretty fresh so it can be that too. I personally have Windows 7 Ultimate x64 NFR* and I feel its more stable. It doesnt crash as often as it used to with Vista and it is a little bit more intuitive. Also it uses less resources. I would say Windows 7 is more responsive and it is definitely not worth it to rollback to Vista.
*NFR means Not For Resell/Retail. I have obtained a Genuine copy disc directly from Microsoft 2 weeks before release date. I obtained it because I work for Best Buy and it was an accommodation if you were one of the first 25,000 employees that completed the trainings on Windows 7. -
Thanks for the responses guys. I really have a dilemma regarding the OS choice. For some reason, I feel like the the difference in temps will influence the work I do.
I do not know about you, but in xp my hdd runs 35C under normal pressure and in vista/win7 45C. The GPU is also 10C hotter in vista/win7 than in xp. Just freaks me out a bit.
I guess I will just try to make some more tests and chose one.
Thanks again for sharing.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone been gaming on win7 with p6860? how is the temps/performance?

I installed 7 on my 6831 and notice almost no difference in performance, battery life, temps, or stability. It may be alot better than Vista was at launch but I was expecting much more when I installed it, all the hype and very little difference in the end for me. Compared to a patched updated Vista I don't really think its worth retail price.

I upgraded when I installed a new SSD so of course it feels snappier. No changes temp or performance wize other than what I would expect from the SSD upgrade.
I was using Vista Ultimate 64 sp2 before and if I didn't get the new OS for free it wouldn't have been worth the cost.
If you have issues with heat try undervolting your CPU. Should help quite a bit. -
You know, guys. I hate to be a "party pooper" in a sense. But I guess I will stick to the good old dual boot vista/xp.
Thanks for the contribution. You really helped me a lot.
Kind regards,

Vista/xp are hard to like after using 7 imo

I upgraded last night and in all honesty I really like windows 7. I think it's a much more stable and reliable operating system compared to windows vista. XP is still a decent os, but I think w7 is the best windows based operating system on the market right now.
