I recently opened up my P6860FX to clean out the GPU fan, and when I put it back together, the power button on the top left stopped working. I took it back apart multiple times to make sure that everything is plugged incorrectly, which it is as far as I can tell.

The power button does not do anything now. But the Windows Hot Start button (the arrow button just to the right of it) will turn on the system.

    ?

Did I plug something in wrong? Is this a driver that needs to be updated for Windows 7 (I am currently running Win 7 Home 64bit)? Any help you guys can provide will be greatly appreciated. :)

Did you unhook only one end of the ribbon when you took it apart? Mine folds in kind of a Z at the mainboard end, and a 180* at the power strip end.

I just now opened up the media bar section and made sure that both ends were plugged in securely, and that they were not upside-down. :( I can't figure out for the life of me why it won't work.

Can you upload a couple pics of all the ribbon connections on the media strip?

Did you remove any of the circuit boards that mount on the media panel, or any of the tiny ribbon cables that connect them? These boards fit into tiny slots, them down over alignment pins, and held with small screws, if the board for the power is not positioned properly, the button won't work.

I'll try toys some pics later tonight. I found a listing on eBay for the power button ribbon cable for my model for $4, so I might pick it up in case I damaged the cable somehow.

A friend of mine suggested making a connection between the two points where the ribbon connects with a graphite pencil, to see if power current will transfer in place of the ribbon. Anyone in here know if that will actually work?

Ok, here's a pic of the connections between both the power ribbon cable that goes to between the power button and the mobo, and also the ribbon that goes between the media bar and the mobo. All I can think of at this point is that I have a damaged ribbon cable for the power button. Thoughts?

I have the same problem, I had to reinstall a motherboard, everything works, except the media strip and the touch-pad. I have checked all the connections. Is the blue colored side of the ribbon suppose to face up? I had to replace a bad motherboard a tech put in, I put my old one back in, I am going to use it as a spare anyways.

Endymion86, it looks like the end of the ribbon in the power button board, may be inserted upside down.
If the circuit board is facing up, the blue side usually goes down exposed connections facing up.

I checked just now, and both connections have the blue side facing down like they should. I tried flipping them just to check, and still had no success. I'll let you know if the new ribbon cable I ordered off of Ebay makes a difference, but it won't be here for a week or so.

I'm all out of ideas. :(

I was right! It was the ribbon cable going from the power button to the mobo! WHOOHOO!!!! I ordered a new one off ebay for $4, and swapped the old one out as soon as it came in the mail - the power button now works flawlessly!

Thank you very much for all of your help, everyone!

Dunno if external links are allowed or not, but here goes...

The seller I bought mine from is no longer a registered user on ebay. Figures. :/

However, there is one listing on the site right now for that same piece. The cable in question is compatible with all in the P-63 through P-68 FX series.

50.4V605.011 NEW Gateway P-6831fx Power Button Cable - eBay (item 170590478476 end time Feb-12-11 14:53:42 PST)

I bought the whole Medea bar on feabay for $39.99, and it was the wrong one, it does not have the media center launch button (P-17X FX models) :( I think all I need in the power cable, the cheapest is $14.99 +$4.99 SH, this is a expensive little repair :/ If anyone needs a media bar for a P6860FX let me know.
