So after using this computer for about 1 year the quality of the games has dropped. They basically get waves of lag. Even if I turn the graphical settings down I still get lag. The CPU runs around 80 C when I game so I figured maybe that is causing the lag.

I took my computer apart and I am not very technically savy but I learned that you need to use thermal compound to replace the heatsink, the part that is confusing for me is that I thought there were 2 processors, so why does the heatsink mainly rest over one, and what I believe to be the other processor has a what I believe to be a TIM pad on it. Why are they not evenly made, or maybe I don't really know what the difference is.

Are these temperatures too high? Am I going about this the correct way? I am only replacing the thermal paste on the one that does not have the pad. And I figured cleaning out the dust might solve the issue.

Anyone else with a similar issue who fixed it? I did a factory restore thinking it was software issues, and MW2 online now doesn't really lag, yet ME2 lags in single player still and so does MW2, while when I first used the laptop it ran fine.

I don't think it's the GPU because the temp is about 60C when I game.

    Any help is super appreciated.

GPU sounds like it is not upclocking properly. most GPU's on these when stressed even at stock clocks should approach 70c or greater.

The Heat Sink contacts directly to the CPU and the heat pad is over the North Bridge............

I'm finding myself in the same situation, and, was going to start a thread asking if I needed to replace the GPU pad after I pulled the assy out.

Is there such a replacement or should I remove the pad and use the CPU thermal compound?

I'll be using IC Diamond 7 Carat for the CPU, and blowing out the dust, getting rid of the dust build up across the vent, etc.

Hoping it makes a difference with my machine -- Lord of the Rings On-line just hasn't been the same.

So you think the GPU is not upclocking properly? How would I go about making sure that is the problem and fixing it?

I figured the problem was with the CPU, maybe it's performance went down overtime from being at hot temperatures. After cleaning the heatsink the CPU temp went from 80c to 40c, but maybe there is residual damage I just don't know.

    Thanks for the help.

If you took the heatsink off you need to clean the old thermal compound with isopropyl alcohol and reapply new thermal compound, just a little.

After cleaning it out my temp went down 40c, but I did not get marked improvement in performance.

Might want to try a factory default restore, I feel like it improved a bit after that, but not to how it used to run.

I am basically out of ideas. I OCed the GPU and still can't run crysis in top resolution. Even get a small amount of lag at lower resolutions.

Well after googling upclocking I came upon a thread -http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=769506&mpage=1

And from that thread I read a very simple thing, go into nvidia control panel>manage 3d settings> in power management mode select prefer maximum performance.

I believe after an exhausting battle with my computer and instead of doing the easiest thing possible, I finally fixed it. Crysis runs pretty ing awesome now.

Thank you sir for the path to the solution. I must have changed it a long time ago or maybe a new driver was installed with default settings, but I am the wiser now.

Do you recommend disabling powermizer? What exactly does that do?

As a side question, during all this I did a factory restore and during updating windows I noticed some of the updates add things that run like the .net optimization and other windows programs that tax the CPU usage so I restored to the point before any windows updates to try to get the computer running well.

My question is, is it a pretty bad idea not to get the windows updates even with Comodo firewall set at high settings and running malware bytes periodically?

Anyone else get lag from the updates or is it a good idea to stay current?

So, two days ago, pulled the access hatch off, stuck a rubber eraser on the fan, and blew out the crap at the vent. Got a huge big ol'honkin chunk of dust that came out. Everything has been fine until tonite. I'm getting as low as 2.5 and no higher than 50 fps in lotro. It's weird, the fans are NOT kicking on at all -- which I think might be my issue?

No, I have not installed any updates, any new software, nada nothing. I'm DL'ing the latest and greatest driver from Nvidea now -- was at 186.xx (which had worked fine and i saw no reason to change) this one appears to be 25x.xx. Will let ya know how it goes.

But even now, I can tell due to the lag between letters while I'm typing, things aren't looking good...

Oh, Zapp, I wiped my machine in November and installed W7 ultimate. I wiped out the recovery partition (on purprose) so that path isn't available to me. But thanks for offering. :)

I tried the nvidea control pan changing the power setting tip Zapp found, and that didn't help -- would the cooling fan not speed up as an upclocking issue?

Well, okay -- the left hand side fan, previously not coming on, has finally decided to start spinning.

Pretty much, I let the box run until the battery completely decharged and shutdown. Put it on power, powered it up, the fan make a little "windie uppie" kinda noise I've never heard it make before, and voila -- my game is running between 65-95 fps (avg what I used to get).

Is it possible I got some backspin on that fan when I blew out the dust?

you could have over spun and locked the fan up by seizing it.............
