UPDATE: It seems its not just the Dynex USB mouse, but also if I plug in other USB devices, sometimes the laptop will freeze requiring a hard boot.
For those having problems with p7811FX crashing mid-game, are you by any chance using a DYNEX USB CORD MOUSE?
Basically I've had my p7811FX repeatedly crash mid-game (frozen screen, .5 second audio loop, need a hard reboot) for GRID, WoW, and Quake 4, and at first I thought it was heating or instable RAM, but now I think it MIGHT be caused by my the DYNEX brand USB mouse that I bought. Yes, a mouse.
Here's my P7811FX story:
Bought it Sunday morning, along with a *DYNEX USB CORD MOUSE* Booted fine, installed photoshop, bioshock, GRID, STALKER, Oblivion, Quake 4, World of Warcraft...played a ton of music, youtube, etc for hours with NO PROBLEMS, but how's the gaming???
Started Playing WoW...15minutes CRASH: Frozen Screen and .5 second audio loop...HARD REBOOT
Play WoW again, CRASHES again...REBOOT
OK, now I play GRID racing. 30mintues...CRASH...REBOOT
GRID again for a bit, then CRASH....
Play Quake 4...30minutes and then CRASH
The crash is always the same: frozen screen and audio loop. can only do a hard reboot.
I got SOO pissed off I did not want think I somehow bought a defective product nor did I want to believe this much-hyped Gateway laptop line was simply ****. So next:
I monitor my heat with Rivatuner and SpeedFan. I prop my laptop about an inch off my desk. Highest during GRID was 50degC for CPU and 70degC for GPU. Those are safe temps I'd say?
Next I tried installing new Nvidia drivers from laptop2go.com...used 174.93 with the modded inf files, etc. Well guess what, MY GAMES STILL CRASHED.
Then I realized that during two of the crashes, the games froze right when I moved my mouse. Also, when I was simply listening to music, I plugged in the USB mouse and it completely froze the computer (hard reboot). I should note that except for this occasion, I plugged in the mouse many times without it crashing the computer and I've used it to surf the net, etc just fine. Also, I played WoW, GRID, and Quake with the mouse moving and looking around just fine, but unexpectedly it would crash and I realized two of these crashes where at the split second I moved my mouse..after not moving it for a few seconds. So I googled "DYNEX mouse sucks" and apparently another guy was complaining about the DYNEX mouse freezing up his computer (not a 7811FX). Here is the page: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/584823
OK so now I unplug my mouse and try gaming with my touchpad. I played WoW and GRID (both previously freezing up) for HOURS and no more freezing! Could it be that my DYNEX mouse was causing problems all along? Or is the 7811FX USB port messed up? I should go a try a new mouse. The DYNEX is a cheap 19 dollar mouse from Best Buy, so perhaps it really does SUCK? I sure hope so, for the sake of my 7811.
I will continue testing my games and report back later.

Try plugging in other USB devices. My first 7811 would lockup when I plug in my thumb drive or external hard drive. Weird thing is that this only happens during and after I play a GPU intensive game.
2nd 7811 is greatran GRID for about 2 hours and it was fine.

Try reinstalling the chipset driver?

this is really strange and very frustrating -
I've been using a Logitech Battlefield 2142 "G5" Mouse.
Not a single crash. -
Ive heard stories about Vista being incredibly sensitive to some drivers to the point where it becomes unstable. I really would not totally discount the dynex thing. Vista froze on me once so far on my third machine...and it happened when I clicked Computer...which happened to have an external HD hooked up via USB. I duno though...I use all my USB ports 24/7 and that was the only freeze I have seen on my new unit.

I plugged in about 3-4 different brand mice and keyboards into my 7811-FX to test this and not a single lockup running XP 32-bit.
-
I doubt its the Dynex Mouse, no matter how cheap Dynex may be
I will comment, though, that the 7811FX is unstable with its SATA Controller. I got random disk lockups despite any driver version available. At first, I thought maybe it was the new ICH9M causing the issues, but I've since bought a VAIO Z and tested the new Centrino 2 Latitude, Thinkpad T400, and HP without any such issues. -
OK it definitely is not the Dynex mouse. But rather it is caused simply by USB devices I think. I have tried playing games with a different USB mouse and I STILL get the same crashes. They games don't freeze when I don't plug in any USB mouse.
What is going on here??? -
For some reason my Brand New Gateway P-7811FX CRASHES on World of Warcarft constantly.... I have a Razer Lachesis Mouse and 16Gb Attache Flash Drive and Logitech Keyboard attached the all (3) usb ports and it works amazing for 20min-2 hrs on gameplay and then crashes forcing me to hard-boot the rig....very sad I paid so much money for a faulty system.....
QUESTION!!
If I upgrade to an X9000 Cpu will the system crash less maybe??

i listed my temps in my original post. but by now i'm pretty certain i have a faulty unit so i will exchange for a 2nd one. problem is the local BB is out of stock right now so i'll have to wait. LAME.

I'm having exactly the same symptoms as the OP. For me I believe it started after I installed a second HD.
Has anyone had these issues and been able to resolve them? -

I realized I had been using a different mouse for a while. Normally, I've got the laptop connected to my TV and use a Logitech wireless desktop, which had been working fine. However, some games were just easier to play when sitting in front of the laptop screen, so i used a regular USB mouse (logitech also).
I have since reverted back to the wireless and haven't had a freeze, yet. One week!
Also, I read in another thread that unpowered usb devices could be the source of this behaviour. Try using a powered hub or other means of externally powering your usb devices.
