Hello all,
I upgraded to a X9100 CPU, ICD7, and Windows 7 and got some pretty killer overclocks. Well, things worked great for a time, then I began getting random, and sometimes rather frequent lockups during gaming. These are the black screen, hearing sound, have-to-hard-reset to fix lockups.
They happen during any game - League of Legends, Fallout New Vegas, Rift, etc. Some interesting variables: League of Legends doesn't lockup if I turn all graphic settings to very low. I also just tried a game of LoL with graphics turned back up, but my CPU underclocked/undervolted to 2.4 GHZ/1.1625V. No crash, but I'm unsure if that's reliable or not yet.
Other things: I have tried numerous video drivers, including the newest ones from Nvidia, have run many registry checker/cleaners, defragged, chkdsk'd...
My theory is that the power brick that came with the laptop was already barely enough to get the job done, so with a more power-hungry CPU, the brick did all it could for a while (hence things working at first), but kept wearing down and getting more and more damaged, until now it just refuses to work properly any more.
Does this theory seem likely? Am I possibly missing something? Are there more tests I should run, esp ones that might point to a software problem? Should I just put the old CPU back in? Am I right in that the original power brick is a piece of garbage? For those of you with upgraded CPUs, did you get an aftermarket power brick? Is this potentially just temperature problems? BIOS (I never updated)?
Thanks for the input.
PS - Has anyone else had a lot of hard drives go bad in their P7811FX? I've had 3 fry on me now...That's very possibly the PSU's fault too, right?

Do you overclock the video as well? Now the brick can cause issues as when it starts getting too borderline of the capacity the voltage can start to fluctuate. This slight fluctuation can cause your issues. All electronics over time loose their capabilities especially when they are being pressed along the bleeding edge.
Placing a better brick definately should not hurt. you may find you can OC with a lowered core voltages as those fluctuations lower. It could though also be the system. The system has to break down the primary voltage to system levels and it will loose its capability over time as well. No matter what brick you use the system breakdown will limit the abilities. -
I am actually noticing my system seems more stable with the CPU voltage at the 1.1625, even with the clock back up to 3.06 GHZ. What's the highest OC you think I can achieve with that voltage?
No, my video is not OC'd. I will keep testing at this voltage and see if my problems stop.
Do you believe this problem sounds like it could be anything other than the power-related thing? -
I run 3.2 @ 1.875............

Edit; 1.875 = portable Smores maker...............
