Watch out on ebay at least that you don't get a BGA chip that has pins added. out of the 4 on there right now only one appears to be a true FCPGA chip. It's probably not a bad upgrade, it'll keep getting cheaper, but the resale value of your P8400 will keep going down (I'm pretty sure you have a P7805u like me right?)

I went for it. The P9600 boosted my 3dmark score by over 800 points and there is a noticeable improvement performing normal tasks. The only thing is that I wish I could monitor my cpu temps, but I can't seeing as how it's an ES chip. :(

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=120342480106

This one is an Engineering Sample, I'm not sure if its would display temps or not

    http://cgi.ebay.com/LowPower-25W-In...14&_trkparms=72:1229|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318

Same seller, this one is a QS so it I think it will be more likely to display temps and what not, but I honestly don't know that for a fact.

Extremeprocessor is a well known and respected seller, all the other ones i've seen (they all have a picture of a tray full of cpus) are ES BGA chips which really isnt what you want.

Yeah you don't want a QZUL, if you google that s-spec you'll see its a FC-BGA chip, which means its been modified to work as a FC-PGA.

my QS chip can monitor temperature and is of E0 stepping... the only thing that appears different than an OEM is an "ES" mark on cpuz... other than that it's all the same :p

The QS is basically the same as the oem version. It is the final engineering sample so it will report temperatures etc. If buying a es, buy the QS versoion otherwise just get an oem one. I have bought many engineering samples before and now I only get QS versions. Good Luck.

I just ordered a P9600 QS as well. Not so much for the frequency increase but the double L2 size. I was hedging on a T9800 but the higher price and mainly higher TPD put me off. I know 25w is a non heat or power consumption issue with the P7805u so it is a no brainer.

P9600 ES works fine with higher temps (you can check it via TZS temps) It still never goes above 75C
P9600 QS works better core temps are in low 30s and maxes around 70C
    T9800 ES DOES NOT WORK!!!!!
T9800 QS works like a charm idels around 40C and maxes at 80C. These temps are beter than x9100.

Txtremeprocessor is one hell of guy to deal with. I bought more than 40 CPUs from him. All were fine.

Yea, those are the temps. I've been using to monitor my CPU. When doing normal tasks such as browsing the Internet, they stay in the mid-30's for me.

I ordered a tube from Newegg. I want to do the northbridge as well and may get the courage up to do the GPU as well. I've found factory paste is usually just adaquate and not much beyond that. Done properly this should insure no heat issues for the life of the machine.

I need to investigate once I pull the heatsinks. They also usually use a thermal pad and these can be a huge limitation. If all looks well I will be removing these in favor of just the MX-2. it is more work but with my older XT500T I saw a 5c drop in temps. Again though that ran hot enough to see such a drop, as the components run closer to ambient it becomes that much harder to realize large drops in temp.

use isopropyl alcohol to remove the leftover thermal paste from the factory... I got mine from walmart above 90% pure alcohol for cheap... do not use nail varnish

If the upgrade is a success then it is time for at least some good quality alcohol of the 100 proof variety, do they sell that at your walmart too? If not then need to make another stop on the way home...... :)

The thermal pad on the 7805 is just on the GPU (I think that is what that chip is). The CPU has cheap thermal paste on it. I did read, though, that you cannot substitute paste for a thermal pad due to the thickness difference. What would you guys use in place of the thermal pad? The pad, btw, looks like it just lifts off.

I put a T9600 in my 7805...core temps are pretty cool during normal use (20-30C during idle). Pretty happy with those temps with a "T" processor. I used AS5 for my paste.

There isn't paste on the GPU, just the thermal pad. It will either stay stuck to the heatsink assy or stay stuck to the GPU. Just leave it alone, don't touch it or apply anything to it.

Speaking of customs, I'm going to return my current t9800 ES to a seller in China. What options should I choose to minimize costs on both sides? Do I label the package as a gift and put it in a bubble envelope instead of a box? (The cpu came in a small wooden box so the bubble envelope won't kill it)

You should be able to just mark it as "RETURNED ITEM" or something, gift can get you in trouble. You're not selling it after all so there shouldnt be a duty on it.
