I bought a Gateway MX3558. It comes with a restore disk and a partition on the HD. I'm wondering what the purpose of the partition is if I have the restore disk? Does the restore disk have the OS and the partition the needed drivers and settings? I would like to remove the partition if possible.

The real issue is that the Disk that you have often does not have all of the drivers. Just do a search to find how some people have had to search for them.

Point being: backup your drivers first.

Also, if I am not mistaken, when you reinstall you will be given the option of whether or not you want to set up a recovery partition.

The other advantage of the recovery partition is that the XP key is sort of "embeded" so that it does not have to be entered every time. I don't think that the Disk is set up that way.
