Any idea how liong the wait will be for the 7807 and whether or not it will have the better screen?
The price is the same now.
Better processor vs. better screen?
-
what? a 7807 version is coming out!??! i was going to pick up 7805u.
Know what are the specs for 7807? -
You can see the possible specs for the 7807u and the 7808u
at J&R's website, h e r e.
Don't know when they will be released, though. -
edit: whoops...though you were talking about the 7805.
personally, i would go for the better screen. but i like a lot of room to have all my needed windows open and not minimized. -
As of this morning, it looks like the 7801 is deactivated on Newegg.
I was juggling between getting the 7805 at Best Buy, the 7801 on Newegg, trying to catch a refurbished 7811 on Tiger Direct, or picking up a used 68** or 78** on Ebay.
Looks like my options are getting much narrower... -
Yep I noticed as well...no more 7801 anywhere. I guess I will do some hunting at Bestbuy, but without the good screen I am going to pass on it. With any luck the 7807 will come with the better screen.
-
You know what's funny? I just got a 7801u from newegg about a week ago but it had the big screen blotch you've probably heard about. I sent it back to newegg for a replacement and now the item is deactivated.
I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever see the laptop or my money ever again. -
that is a good question...gl
-
How much of an impact will the smaller screen have? Im kicking myself for not buying one off newegg. My local bestbuy has their gateway but as we know with the smaller res.

Now, J&R has what they call the Gateway LX.W430X.001 P801U 17" Notebook PC, h e r e.
The Gateway folks say this is the P-7801u.
Not the best price, though. -
Cool...is that model number going to be popping up anywhere else? I dont like the price at all. It does look like the same computer, stat wise anyway. If I had to guess something is different though. Anyone else have an opinion?
-
I wonder if J&R will match Best Buy if I just walk into their store and ask? Anyone have an idea?
-
It is just dumb that only one online store is selling this machine.
-
Believe it or not, it looks like it's back at Newegg (but at the $1399 price):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834101166 -
Also, not sure what you don't like about the price. Although it is $100 more than the lowest price offered by Newegg, it's $100 less than the *current* Newegg price - you also get free shipping and pay no sales tax (unless you live in NY or buy it in one of their stores). Only way to get it for less is if (a) Newegg lowers their price, or (b) you get a 7805 from BB with a 1920 screen. -
Well when I know good and well many folks got basically the exact same machine from BB for 1050 I would feel like an idiot spending hundreds more, especially during this economic freefall.
-
I've ordered from J&R before.
Try their "800" number, talk to a salesperson, and see if they will price match if you find a better price on the Net.
Oh, I don't think we will ever see that $1049 price again (unless it is when the product is being discontinued). I suspect it was supposed to be an "introductory special" price for after the Holidays.
Just a guess, though. -
Or
TigerDirect - h e r e, for $1299.99. -
Yeah, I agree with that "guess"; introductory special coupled with higher inventory levels which resulting in a (unsustainable) low price. The follow up will most likely be a closeout special, at which point a lot of people will be thinking that the replacement is the better deal.
Also, with the economy in the state that it's in, you have to think retailers will be ordering fewer of, well, everything and, as a result, manufacturers will drastically cut back on production (actually, they've been doing just that). The fact that I slept through most of high school and college econ classes notwithstanding, I think I recall learning that such reductions in supply do not lead to bargain prices. -
Gateway seems extremely confused on how (or even that) they're supposed to be selling their products.
-
Reduction is demad can lead to a short term reduction in cost to clear inventory but then the opposite happens when demand increases and inventory is low so this tends to ballance out somewhat. Bad time for a drastic new model though.
Sales are down and most people wait for school start etc before needing an upgrade to a new machine. About the only good thing is maybe they'll get some people willing to use their tax refunds......... -
Good times.. Good times..
Pay Newegg the increased price for the 7801 or pre order the 7807?
