I'm having trouble playing HD video files.
I tried playing 1080p and 720p files but its playing horriblely slow. Also sound is not synced with video.
Are there codecs I need to install or good video player that can play high quality HD videos?
is it because my lcd only support up to 1440x900 and file is bigger than lcd can handle?

What codecs and media player are you using?

    Also what CPU/GPU?

it only does that for me in the first few seconds of the video, even when i had the stock cpu. Try opening VLC and pressing Ctrl P, go to the video settings and see if "use hardware.." is enabled. If so, then try reinstalling it or running it in Dx10 mode.

Have you tried getting DIVX or K-Lite? Both are programs with players but also have the latest codec's upgrading your codecs is best when playing any video due to problem you have.
I would suggest getting K-lite (google it) and download and install, I recommend these, no need to bother with the player it comes with, you simply want it for the codecs.

Use DivX. The stock cpu is more than enough to play HD videos.
