    My CD/DVD drive isn't reading/burning cd's anymore.

    I'm on a 6860fx, vista 64 bit.

I tried deleting filters in regedit and reinstalling drivers.

I'm extremely sad about because I think I'm going to have to replace the cd drive (and I'm broke). My warranty's been out.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Or does anyone know how I can replace my cd drive? I can't figure out how to take it out.

Isidrox - I have the same laptop as you have and, fortunately, I have not had any problems with the cd/dvd. I have not pulled my drive out of the case, but I assume the connector on the Sony will fit your Gateway. The main thing I wanted to point out though, is that I bought (and returned) an HP dv6z thinking the that Blu-ray from my HP dv4t would fit - and it was a no-go. The connector on the AMD-mobo dv6z was very different from the connector on the Intel-mobo dv4t. I will check tonight (I'm at work now) on how to remove it.

Edited to add Gateway manual link: http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/Mobile/8512680.pdf

I just ordered the ad7590a drive from Newegg. I'm hoping it would work just dandy when I plug it in.

I guess I never realized that disk drives get old too. Good thing there's a year warranty on the incoming one. That's a year for it to break over and over again.

Isidrox, have you tried to clean the lens on the CD/DVD drive?

That may be all that you need, if you smoke near your laptop, chances might be that the lens is dirty.

If that doesnt work then its most likely broken.
