So... I love this new laptop (6860 FX). One thing is left stuck in my craw though. The function and left ctrl key are friggin swapped from what the standard on every other keyboard on the planet is.

Does anyone know of any software that I could install that would help me re-map just those two keys for all applications?

Then I can just carefully repaint the text on them. :)

Seriously, this would be greatly appreciated.

I agree, it's a crime against nature and the only reason I'm not typing this on a ThinkPad right now. I have an old 12" Compaq that I use from time to time with that layout and it drives me nuts. Unfortunately, I don't think there's any way to change it via software, at least that I've ever seen. As far as I know Fn is not a modifier like Alt or Ctrl, but actually changes the keycodes sent by the keyboard at the hardware level. But if someone else knows how to do it, I'll be watching this thread also.

I just posted a thread about this a day or two ago.

I'm currently trying to hack the registry to see what i can come up with. If i'm sucessful i'm going to post a guide on how to do it.

    wish me luck

    hrm... well i give up.

The best i can tell the "fn" key is actually firmware that causes the extra layer of the keyboard to be accessable.

So unless someone knows something i dont i'm going to mark this one down as impossible.

I have tried everything from editing the registry to every keyboard mapping program that i could find...most of them dont even recognize the fn button as even being there.

I can make the F1 button a space bar or the "R" key a hot key that opens Firefox...but not change the fn key.

And then after researching it (you would be surprised how many people have attempted this in the past) its pretty much accepted as firmware or a really really deep bios setting, and i'm not paying 6K for pheonix's BIOS editor

You could peel the back off the keyboard and cut and rewire the traces. I've actually considered doing this it bugs me so much, but eventually I come to my senses.

Yep. It's impossible. Ugh... I guess it's the "UK" layout... I thought Gateway was an American company =p

I thought about that...but if i screw up theres no real fixing it. I would have to beg them to let me keep my warrenty and exchange it.

But once i start taking my dremel to the keys so i can backlight the keyboard i'll probably try it out then... worse case senerio i have to buy a new keyboard. (a bit down the road still though)

I'll probably crack the case though to see if it is an easy fix(as i'm a bit obsessive)... i have our ET out here right now and with his equipment i should be able to test a few things
I love working on a high tech mobile drilling rig sometiems :)

For right now... i'm still not sure that its impossible to flash in new firmware for the key to be remapped at the base level... not sure though.

It might just be time to find another keyboard that fits the 6860 so i dont have to deal with it anymore...might try out my HP's keyboard see if it fits
