As the subject suggests, is it possible to apply arctic silver 5 to the 8800gts that's supposedly soldered onto the motherboard? Perhaps the heatsink isn't soldered on either.

While we're on the top of as5, it IS at least possible to apply it to the cpu right? Thanks! Can't wait to go for the 1199 deal since I missed it last time.

Oh I'm sure that will/can be done down the road. AFAIK the whole bottom cover will have to be removed. You might want to benchmark your GPU temps to see if anything improved or not.

The HSF unit on the 8800m GTS looks like it is removable.

When I do my CPU upgrade I will take the unit apart and post a video on Youtube.

Awesome, I just want to put as5 on the gpu, because i'm a low temp nut =p If there was a way to make my cpu/gpu be 1 degree, i'd do it.

I'm going to bump this now that the awesome deal is back and even more people have probably picked up the 6831. (I know I have!) Any luck with observations?

Sounds good. Don't forget to swing by the gpu compartment and see if its possible to put as5 on there!

I got the bug to see how this thing was built and to try to take pictures of the GPU.

After taking all 13 bottom screws, drives, and battery I poked around trying to pry the notebook apart, carefully.

This is far as I got. Like my ZE5000 and E1705 it appears that you will have to pull the thing apart in layers from top to bottom and remove the screen. I won’t know for sure until I get my hands on a shop PDF or someone gets real brave.

Bummer, if you have to change out a GPU fan it could get ugly. Why these notebook OEMs don’t use their heads when designing simple things like access ports to service a mechanical fan is beyond me. The CPU was easy to change but why not the CPU fan?

I did get to see one side of the GPU heatsink that was secured much like the CPU. I simply could not tell if it was socketed with the view I had.

I was very disappointed in the casing plastic, very thin and rather brittle looking. I don’t think the P6381 would survive a four foot drop, but you don’t get a Clevo or Toughbook for $1K.

Anyone find a source for a shop manual in PDF?

I guess for now it's difficult to get a service manual for 6831 since it's released for about 1 month?
I would think few months later we probably can have some people leak it ;)

Alright, can't wait to open this sucker up and lower the temps. Speaking of temps, what programs do you guys use to track your cpu/gpu temperatures? I used to use i8kfangui for my DELL but that doesn't work on non-DELLs.

I use speedfan, rivatuner and coretemp to track my desktop cpu and gpu temperatures.

I use ati tool to see how the temps go with my gpu card.

Quite a bit of programs listed there. Which ones do you use for your laptop cpu/gpu?

I don't use any for my current laptop since it's an old P4 with a 9600 radeon graphics card. I would personally use coretemp for startup and if I needed to monitor my gpu temp I would use speedfan once the P171X starts to ship.

I would probably use Speedfan, Coretemp and maybe Everest for pretty much everything.

Coretemp just measures the cpu temps, speedfan outputs what the hardware monitor chips monitors temps including hard disk, gpu etc. Everest is another monitor system for almost everything, but overkill for me.

    =) Thanks for the explanation.

Edit: One quick question about speedfan. There's 5 temps, one is hd (which is hard drive), then there's core 1 and core 0 which I assume are the two cpu cores. Then there's temp 1 and temp 2, what are those?

Click on configure, and another window should pop up. I'm assuming if the chip states that it is a nvidia card, then it's the GPU - otherwise it might be the southbridge, northbridge, etc. I relabeled the default names in SpeedFan, which is why you don't see Temp1 there. (screenshot from my desktop pc)

If it doesn't show the gpu temp, you can try Rivatuner and a good guide from Gophn is here.

Well, I went to the config area, and this is what I see. I wonder if the gpu even has a temperature sensor. Anybody else manage to track their gpu temps on their laptop?

Woohoo! It detects the gpu and everything! Now, if only I could get this to stay open in the taskbar or boot when windows starts...

I'm not worried about the temp actually. I'm using the cpuid's hwmintor.

GPU fan will turn on once GPU temp hits 46C and stops at 40C
I didn't track CPU fan but I suspect it's doing similar.

I hope there's a tool we can control fan since frequent start/stop will drastically reduce the life-time of fan.

I think my T9300 is giving speed fan and Riva tuner fits. I'm missing whole sets of switches in both programs. TAT is another program that refuses to run.

So far I get great results, with logging to check OC settings, with nTune and Everest. Just a heads up if you swap CPU's

A lot of programs aren't detecting the t9300 cpu.

So going back on track to the thread's original question, has anybody decided to go for broke and try to put as5 onto their gpu for better overclocking? I'm sure somebody has at least tried to get to the gpu compartment now that the 6831 is in many more hands.
