I'm shortly going on a bit of a road trip around the US of A. Does anyone know the best way to power my P-6831 FX from the cigarette lighter. We are hoping to buy an old Class-C RV so maybe it will have proper sockets but just in case...
Just found this:
http://www.wholesalebatteries.us/re...ptop/Gateway-2000/CX2615-Series/AC1110-10.htm
Says it's only 60 Watt though and my power supply says 120 Watt so i assume this aint hefty enough?
Ok all these are 120W but no P-6831 - are any of the others compatible:

Would this work:

All the others on Gateways site are below 120 Watt. Seems a bit silly going DC to AC to DC though - is there no way of going straight DC?

My P-6860FX says it's output is 19VDC at 6.32A = 120W, that's probably constant and not surge. In otherwords, I would get one above 120W
To my knowledge you can't increase the voltage without converting to AC. I believe the DC voltage needs to be converted to AC so that a transformer can be used to bump up the voltage, then it gets rectified back to DC. I could be wrong though. -

I bought a power converter from Office Depot. Its a total POS that gets to be about a million degrees, but it does the job very nicely. its only like 90 or 100 watts (cant remember) but as long as i have the AC on in the car (to keep the converter cool) my 6860 gets like 22 hours of battery life. It puts in just enough that your never really draining the battery fast enough to matter so can get ALONG time out of the battery.
now i wouldnt recommend doing this very often, but if its every once in a great while i dont think it will hurt anything -
Yeah this is going to be every day for about 2 months though so it's got to be as if I was charging from the mains really.
Any electrical experts out there? I'm not too hot in this area -

Get one that states at least 120W RMS, or more. For instance, i have one that says "400W!" But when you read the fine print that 400 is peak, 200 continuous. More is OK, less is bad.

get a power inverter 150 to 300 watt's for like 30 bucks or so..
these are some models to choose from.

you will burn up the first one and the second one will on keep the laptop on and not charge it. i tried both of them before. still have the second one. and i have the 400 watt one mounted in my car, but wired directly to the battery. -
johnksss - What's your setup wiring direct to the battery? I've been thinking about doing this in a van.

Brill cheers for link John. Will check those out.
So the only way to do it is DC - AC - DC effectively? -
not sure i quite understand your question....
-
Well what I was wondering is if there is an adaptor which will allow you to directly feed the DC from the car into the laptop and miss out the inverter and AC adaptor?
-
so your post makes sense now and you would be just about correct.
you need to convert to convert dc to ac and that's it. your laptop adapter is ac. -

john 10-4 means "OK," "understood," and "affirmative."
why are so negatively using it -
it was sort of a joke thing. we use two way phones out here. and the standard call is 10-4, but when something is not right...... thus the "negative" or like people will say...example: your the best in the world..................."NOT"
same thing with the negative.
understand it now? -
