Okay so my power went out. My notebook was plugged in but i usually have the battery out since constantly recharging it will kill the battery life.
My question is, how can i make sure that the power outage didnt kill any of my hardware, like some RAM or such? Thx.
Update: Wired internet connection isnt working anymore...giving me "Unidentified Network" =/ Wireless is working fine.
Im also being told that "Some programs are not compatible with Windows color scheme. Windows color scheme has been changed to Windows Visual Basic" or something other on start up now...

back up your stuff reinstall
next time put the battery in -
are u joking? i just reinstalled yesterday after vista went boom...reinstalling windows i always try to keep as the very last option...
im gunna try uninstalling/reinstalling trillian, the program that that windows errors comes up for.
i think something might be wrong my hardware...getting unusual delay between tasks.
update: reinstalled trillian, same problem. the funny thing is, it says changed to windows vista basic, but i dont see any change at all, i think aero is still running. -
sure, you can uninstall reinstall, but that will not take away your concern that something in your hardware went bad. in the end only reinstalling will make you sure if that is so or not.
just try to help, hope your hardware is 100% good.
lastly, by trying to save battery life you put your whole laptop at risk, consult the term "risk management" -
okay quick search on google reveals that the whole change from aero to basic happens with trillian, so nothing to worry about. but my questions is why didnt it show up before? o_o
how is reinstalling vista gunna help me find out if hardware went bad or not...? -
if your drivers wont install or you will get bsod during installation you will know something is wrong, not software.
i thought you said you're lan stopped working. -
if i plug in the ethernet then yes it is giving me unidentifed network, which it didnt before the blackout. But on a happy note the unidentified network problem 1) happens to other people 2) happened to me before and somehow one day started working. my wireless is working fine.
is there any software or anything i can run/scan my computer to test my hardware?
got the trillian aero/basic problem fixed...seems quicktime was the one causing the problem. the really odd thing is i did not ever install quicktime... oh well, installing it now fixed it. -

thx!
gunna run that first thing in the morning...right its time to get some shut eye. its kinda late. -
To test your hardware, run orthos for a couple of hours to test cpu and ram, and then run ati tool for about an hour on "scan for artifacts" mode to test your video card.
Unless there was a power spike (meaning voltage going up) and not having a surge protector then I wouldn't worry about it, and you said power just went out so I would just keep enjoying my FX
cheers -
power actually "flickered" on/off once or twice in rapid succession before it went for an extended period of time, before i had time to take out the plug o_o
okay thx for the advice andrew -
Hardware doesnt usually go bad from power shortages. Its usually Windows getting corrupted.
Doing a clean install of Vista can completely rule out a software issue. -
so thats +2 for a vista install. im thinking im gunna go for it.
nothing like two windows reinstalls in a week... -
The laptop's battery is a major advantage compared to a desktop pc.
You dont need to buy a ups/battery system separately.
I would keep the battery in if I were you.
Its cheaper, faster, easier to replace a battery than some inside component, like a mainboard (yikes).
And in case you do need to replace the battery you can still use the laptop on AC power while waiting for the order. -
Just one question before you do - you have run a basic disk check which should correct any corruptions I hope?
-
um i have no idea what that is -_-
<--- total noob
so that would have to be a no...mind telling me how? XD -
probably all you really need to do is run a c:\chkdsk /f
this is where that nifty little restore partition comes in. allowing you to pretty much do almost any type of fixing while in dos mode.....but if you deleted it......then 3rd party is the way to go. -
thx for all the advice guys.
i ran the chkdsk, not errors came up. even my wired connection is working now.
the only problem i see now is the unusual delay between loading tasks and stuff. but im starting to think maybe the problem is just in my head. meh.
thanks again guys. -
nice!! well at least your back on track!
always run chkdsk after any type of power failure. "rule of thumb" -
now im gotta go return these POS notebook coolers to frys lol...
notebook drama. -
what do you mean, return them. what happend? -
i got 3 coolers from Frys, one coolmax, one rhino, one antec. all sucked, altho they were all cheap; i was debating maybe to keep the coolmax one if just for its usb hub, it was only 15 bucks, but in the end decided it was too big to serve just as a usb hub. now im thinking maybe ill just give in and order a zalman. i wish the nc2000 was 40 bucks like the nc1000 o_o bleh.
on a happier note, i got a 2 gb flash drive from fry's for a little less then 2 bucks after rebate. i bought two but didnt think of the fact that only one rebate per house hold...so now im gunna have to return one of them lol. -
i hear ya...im still using the rhino on the gpu. right now it was doing more than them others we're. still debating if it is really helping. i know it gets very hot sitting on the gpu though. lol
Power went out, notebook wasnt on battery...how to check hardware?
