I recently purchased my Gateway Notebook and have run into a problem. Today I tied to copy a DVD using DVD Shrink and NeroExpress as I have in the past with my old Toshiba. Talk about slow! It took forever to complete the Shrink and twice as long to copy the DVD using NeroExpress!

I got some helpful information off the DVD Shrink website and tried to apply it to my notebook features, to no avail. They mentioned going into the Device Manager and checking the IDE/ATAPI controller settings for Ultra DMA. In my Primary IDE Channel Setting :General Tab-I am unable to ENABLE my Device Usage Field. Under the Advance Tab- my Transfer mode is set at DMA (if available)- PIO Mode as a 2nd option with the Current Mode set at Ultra DMA.

Secondary IDE Channel Settings: Device 0 reads as follows: Device Usage Field: Use this device (enabled),Advanced Settings: Device Type is not available, Transfer Mode: DMA (if available) & Current Transfer Mode: PIO Mode.

If anyone has suggestions on what/if anything I might be able to do to get this running at an exceptiable speed I would appreciate it. One of the reasons I bought this notebook is because of the DVDRW feature. I have had two Toshiba Satellites (M45-S359) that had to be returned within weeks of purchase and I really don't want to have to do the same with this one, please tell me that this is not the norm for Gateway DVD-RW's!

This is exactly what is happening with a Notebook I am working on. Either there is a device driver missing, OR, the da** Hard Drive is faulty.

Seeing as you have the same exact problem I am having, I think this is a faulty diver problem. I notices that the computer had Windows Media Center edition... And that the system was not designed for it.

Does anyone have a link to a BIOS update, a Driver update, or any suggestions on what this problem is? Thank you very much.
