Hi!
I have recently some problems with the USB ports of my Gateway 3520GZ.
The first USB port don't recognize ANY USB device I plug in. Only appears the USB Device Not Recognized error.
In the Second port everything works fine
In the 3rd port can only recognize USB 1.1 devices. Is working but appears a message that says The USB device can perform faster if I connect to an 2.0 USB Port.
The weird thing is the 3 are supposed to be 2.0 USB Ports!!!
Please can sombody helps me.
Somebody say I need to upgrade the BIOS of my laptop but I can't find any upgrade either not for the 3520GZ or the most identical the M210.
Thanks for any help
Sincerely:
Joe Berumen

Did you install any software or hardware that might affect your laptop devices? Did you tried XP recovery to bring your laptop to a date where it was working properly?
Updating your Chipset driver (if there is any update) can help. You can also unistall your USB controller drivers (from device manager) so WinXP would recognize everything again and install the proper ones (reboot).
For BIOS updates I would suggest you contact GW support people to get one. I did not find any on their website but my BIOS was updated by them when the laptop went to GW for repairs (MX7515 though). I found the chat based support to be very effective, maybe you can try that, they can connect to your computer to check things while chatting.
Good Luck! -
Hi! Thanks for the response.
I chat with a Gateway technician and the give me two options
The first reinstalling the USB ports and the second re install the original partition.
Well I trie both and nothing still doing the same odd thing.
I ask about an BIOS ubdate but they said the company stop doing support for the 3520GZ and M405 (both are the same models) and there is no new BIOSes.
However they send me with Mr. BIOS or something like that and give me the tip to contact directly to PhoenixBIOS for off-the-company BIOS update.
I'm not sure if this will help in any matter but I will make a try because is a little frustarting had an USB 1.1, USB 2.0 and NO USB at all in my laptop. And is supposed to have 3 USB Ports on it.
If you have more advices please email me because I don't wanna toss this baby.

I have the same laptop and have experienced the same problems. I've tried reinstalling the mobo drivers and uninstalling/reinstalling the USB ports with no luck. Then I found an interesting fix, though I can't remember where I found it.
Anyways, the fix to this problem (which you may have to do more than once if problems persist) is to turn off your laptop, unplug the AC adaptor, and remove the battery. You can experiment with how long to leave it unplugged but what was recommended on another site was to leave it unplugged for a half hour. I have found after doing this procedure 2-3 times that it still works even if done for only a minute or so. But just to be safe leave it without any power for the half hour the first time. This is a crazy solution but when you turn it back on you will find that all your USB ports are working completely normally again!
I believe it may be a voltage issue with this particular laptop. Your problem seems to be the same as mine so definately give this a try. After doing it the first time the problem came back a couple days later but repeating the process two more times has left me problem free for over a month now. Good luck, hope this works for you! -
If it worked before with your current BIOS it (BIOS) shouldn't be the root cause (load defaults just in case)...it should be related to WinXP and USB controller drivers, or for worse a deffective HW funtion.
You can try MrBIOS but my understanding is that there is very little chance they could help you and custom BIOses are very expensive.
Format and Fresh install is always an option...not a nice one though.
I assume you did not buy the extended warranty...that would cover a HW issue. -
I have a 7510 with similar problem: all 4 ports can recognize usb 2.0 device, and works for any way from 10 to 40 minutes, then a message appears that says The USB device can perform faster if I connect to an 2.0 USB Port.
i have to unplug and replug the usb 2 device so the usb port can recognize it again. it is annoying especially when i use a usb tv tuner. I tried reinstall driver , no luck.
