My laptop is a Gateway P-6831 FX with 4gb of DDR2 ram and a 8800m GTS and a 1.86ghz Core 2 Duo. I can upgrade the processor but I was wondering what processor to get. What is the best/ fastest processor I can get without making the GPU the major bottleneck of the system?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

X7800 or T9300, those are the most logical choices.

The X7800 is a bit quicker, but it is hotter and consumes more power.

The T9300 is fast, but not as fast as the X7800, but cooler and consumes less power.

    Ebay either of them.

So the upgrading to the t9300 isnt going to vastly overpower my GPU when it comes to playing games and the like?

but honestly you want the CPU to be the bottleneck in this case, since the GPU isnt upgradable in this laptop, getting the most out of it is what you want.

games are almost always GPU-dependant, but the current processor will bottleneck it. Read the reviews in my sig, the first one was done with a 1.67ghz T5550, and the second one was done with the X7800.

wow thanks i appreciate all of that. Since you know what you're talking about I was hoping I could ask another question. One of my cores is not showing up in CPUID Hardware monitor. is this a normal occurrence?

I just put a T9300 in my 6860fx and it is working great. Temps are lower and like narsnail said, now my GPU is the bottleneck for most applications. Pricing was $169 on ebay minus whatever the cashback is at the time. I got it for $144 because of cashback. Seller was junkpcparts for reference. Doesn't look like he has one currently, but they show up frequently. Just keep checking.

Download the free version of HWMoniter... not the trial version of HWMoniter Pro.

The Free Pro Version trial doesnt show all cores or all of your HDD's.

Not a glitch persay, just a way to make you buy the Full Pro Version (which for laptops is useless)

As to your CPU, yeah pretty much follow narsnail's advice the t9300 or the x7800 is typically the best most people will ever need. If your on a slightly more restrictive budget the t8300 is a very solid CPU or if you have tons of cash then the x9000 is the cream of the crop
