Does anyone know if there is gonna be a quad core coming out that will be a socket p....if so, will you be able to a take an advantage of quad core technology with only a 5400 rpm hard drive?...could I expect to see a significant result with a quad core over the t9300????

    1) Quad core would be much hotter, so watch out.
    2) Processor performance does not really get affected by HDD speed, only loading times are affected (once program is in RAM, HDD speed does not matter anymore).
    3) I think the next gen Core 2 will have a quad core version, but I am not sure.

But most likely? You won't notice the difference.

Later this year we'll see a mobile quad released. I have not heard what socket though, I would assume P. If it is P it still will likely require a BIOS flash.

As greg said, HDD speed and CPU really have nothing to do with each other.

moving to a quad you'll only see a gain if you run encoding/decoding apps or photoshop type programs. gaming you will not see a difference.

they will have a different pin layout, all the quad cores will, and they will likely be very expensive, as in it will be an extreme edition. i cannot cite this, i remember reading it though

The QX9300 Quad Core's 45 watt TDP is 10 more than Merom and 20 more than Penryn. It won't be that much hotter. Its MSRP will be over $1000.

No one knows the pin layout. If it is different, it won't be called Socket P - that's the whole point of a naming convention and socket standard.

It is only a couple of months away.

Thanks for that guys!...I will probably just stick with the 9300...The only reason I brought up hard drive speed is because I had read somewhere that you couldnt fully utilize a quadcore with a slow hard drive(5400rpm or 7200rpm) and only a 10,000 rpm....Thanks for clearing that up, also thanks for letting me know I wont see a difference with gaming....I dont need to spend more money than I need to......

10-20W more TDP means the quad core will NOT work in the laptop. The heating solution isn't designed for that amount of dissipation.

the actual name of the Quad core socket is p'

and the ' is there on purpose :) I almost wonder if it's just a bios revision or something, I would've figured that it would've been named a different socket all together if it did have a different pin layout. That or the chipset is the same and just the Socket of the CPU is different. lol who knows

    I think you are wrong.

The stock Merom is 34 TDP. Folks on this board are using 45 TDP X 7900 and X9000 chips and OCing them.

Socket P' appeared in one secondary quote in a single article and was reprinted on Wiki. Its all meaningless speculation until Intel rolls these out.

My guess: PC makers won't support a new socket that lasts a few months. The next new socket will be for Nehalem (which is radically different from C2D), and even after that platform launches Socket P will continue to exist as a budget socket for some time (until Celeron level Nehalem CPUs arrive).

What will kill us 6831 owners is if the Quad only comes in a 1066 FSB version. Running that chip at 800 FSB will mean ~1.9 GHz rather than 2.533 GHz if it even works. So we need the Quad and a 800 MHz FSB version. Low probability, but worth waiting a bit longer IMO.

    Anyways, we'll know soon enough.

..and then we wait around for Quad ready programs.) We are just now getting true Dual Core Apps or programs that max's one core while the other core loafs doing housekeeping.

I just caved and ordered an x7900 from embrave on ebay for $400 shipped. Seemed like a better deal than the T9300 - the 6831fx BIOS should let me run it at 3.0 GHz.

So yeah, I guess I'll skip quad core this time out.

Id say for 400 bucks you cant go wrong considering the T9300 would run you 330ish shipped or around there and its always nice to be able to OC alittle :)

Yeah, up here in Canada the going rate (NCIX) for a T9300 is $367 + shipping + tax.

We'll see. The X9000 was only $600, but I don't know if the extra $200 is worth it. I'm at about $2000 now including upgrades. :D

Yes, still running the X9000....24/7 running the Folding @ Home project almost exclusively....excellent price on the X7900...I chose the 9000 thinking that eventually the xtra cache may benefit my point totals running the project or I would've gone with the 7900...congrats.

    Running the 15 mutli:

Very pleased overall with the computer and processor upgrade....

My understanding is that max power draw at load is only 94 Watts with the X7900 @ 3.0 Ghz (I forget the review where I read that).

The X9000 in addition to the extra cache would be ~ 10 Watts less. That's a big deal if you are folding 24/7!

I'll redo most of the benchmarks. I'll also post some cpu intensive game scores as well.

I notice the 'ES' after your processor name in Everest. That typically stands for Engineering Sample. The C0 stepping also suggests a first rev of the chip.

Dude, if that is correct you may have an unlocked multiplier. That would be very cool.

Sadly the BIOS does not have any tweaking options...

    argh!

The CPU shipped from China on Sunday. Arrived in my city yesterday. Out for delivery today and the bastage delivery guy made no attempt to deliver, instead he left a 'sorry we missed you' door knocker at the mailbox (we have a commuity box half a block away). What a jerk.

One time I called (I can't remember if it was UPS or FedEx) and complained that an attempt had never been made and it was of DIRE importance that I receive the package that day. I said I'd even drive to the warehouse and pick it up. Anyways, they called the truck and the guy was able to swing past my place a second time. It could be worth a shot if you're about to explode from all of the impatience and excitement! :p
Good luck and can't wait to see the new benchmarks.

I remember Snowsurfer saying he got an 8500 or so with no overclock using a T9300 and just under 10000 after oc'ing. So this is minimally better than that, with very similar specs.
Congrats on the purchase and the nice benchmarks! I don't know how long I can sit on this fence before biting...
