According to the Gateway website the notebook comes with 4096MB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (2-2048MB modules) and Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium (32-bit) SP1. Though everywhere I read, it says that only 64 Bit Vista can recognize 4gb of ram. Is that a typo on the website or is there some reason for doing that? Also would it be more beneficial to by the p-6860 that has a 64- bit processor?

You can put in 4GB,but only 3.25~3.5 will be used.

The difference is only the screen IMHO.

check your gateway dvd and see if it says 32/64 bit.. if so, you can just got do a clean 64 bit install.

only 64 bit op can see 4 gigs or higher of ram.

    32 bit can not.

sp1 has some enhancement that now reads total memory in computer, but that's it. you can not use the full 4 gigs.
