Well the only type of warranty I could find on the best buy site is a $349 geek squad plan  Do they offer any kind of accidental damage/parts plan? Something similiar to what hp offers. (99$ for one year is pretty good in my book)

This may be the deciding factor on wether I get a dv5t or a Gateway 7811FX.

    Thanks

I got the 3 year warranty from Best Buy, they cover any kind of physical damage on the laptop, like the laptop falling and breaking, etc etc. The only damage I know it won't cover is Software like damage and if water is pour to your Laptop on porpuse.

Besides that it covers everything, if the laptop that you want to trade in is still available they will trade it in for a new one, if not they will try to fix it. If they can't fix it and the laptop you have isn't produce anymore they will change it to a laptop from the same specs if it's possible or if you prefer they will give you a value for your laptop and you can pay the difference for a new laptop with better specs.

And how much was that? And what do you mean "spilled water on purpose"? How would they know if it was an accident or not? Are you saying they dont cover water damage?

I can help you out here. Best Buy offers two kinds of plans which are considered Geek Squad Black Tie protection. The first is basically an extended warranty and covers manufacturer's defects and the like. It also covers dead pixels and you get a free battery replacement within the time of your warranty. That is the standard service plan. The advanced service plan is the standard plan with the added bonus of accidental damage from handling. This covers drops, spills and anything in between. The advanced service plan is 100 bucks more. How do I know? I work in the computer dept. at Best Buy

The only thing about Accidental Damage is that there is a limit to what it covers. The thing is that it doesn't cover intentional abuse. Really it is up to the service center to decide whether or not it is covered.

I had one Sony that I took in one day and it fell down a set of stairs. This thing was really banged up. The case was bent, the screen was completely shot. It ended up being junked out and the customer got a new notebook.

If you haven't guessed, I'm a Geek Squad Agent and I practically know the terms of the ADH GSBTP forwards and backwards.

The only thing I was told the 3yr Accidental Damage plan through Best Buy didn't cover (besides willful destruction, which is a given), was total immersion in water/liquids. When the laptop is 1249, it's cheaper to go through Best Buy than Squaretrade by about forty dollars.

Of course, the last time I was on the website, it seems the two year Black Tie protection now costs as much as a three-year Accidental Damage policy cost three weeks ago.

But how much does that cost??

Would they give me a hard time if my Gateway P-7811FX was locking up? Would they take it back without a warranty?

    Details please

How is there a limit, it clearly says on the accidental warranty that it covers many different accidents. So if I spilled a drink on my computer or threw it out of my dorm window on the second floor and the thing smashed. I mean how would you be able to tell if its accidental or was done on purpose. I could pour a 2 liter coke on it and render it useless and how would you know if i said a drink was just spilled on it?

I know I'm going to get into trouble for this but if something like what you described happened to your notebook, don't be stupid and say that's what happened. As far as spillage, that's covered.

Now, if the notebook was in four pieces and it looks like a chainsaw was taken to it, it isn't going to be covered.

It covers spills, but not liquid immersions.
So if you spill ur beer on it, ur warranty covers it.
but if you drop it in a pool, ur warranty is void.

Full submersion is not covered.... let it dry for a week or so and we can't tell a difference. Any accidental damage is covered, in December we had a marine come in with his laptop in 8 pieces, it fell out of his bag when they were marching and got trampled, he walked out with a new laptop at no cost.

Sounds like your going to have a good time explaining how it fell, I don't think i'd be going near a balcony with a laptop.

It should be covered, I'm not to sure about best buy but I got a 3rd party warranty besides my tiger direct, for ANY reason the laptop is damaged (even destroyed) I can get 1 total replacement for every 2 years.

Only sad thing is and I hate for people to read this, I did buy a gateway at best buy once and had to send it back on warranty to replace a missing F5 key, anyhow the warranty said it could fix it, what I got back was a bran new laptop (all my data formatted and windows reloaded) and a new F5 key. I Did NOT get a new laptop, they took my old one, throw an F5 key on it, formatted and sent back. To make matters worse, I called best buy to check on my warranty status and I used up my only replacement - any more damages to laptop and out of luck.

Just make sure you explain situation and get it documented, cause I painfully lost a lot of my files and work. Entire reason why I bought a 7811fx since old one was useless to me now.
