    Hey guys,

I am thinking of buying a new laptop soon, as the old one I have is , one, falling apart, and two, underpowered. I am highly intrigued by the Gateway P-7805u for the price of $1,149.99 from Best Buy.. I just find that to be an incredible deal for that type of hardware.

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/ol...oduct&id=1218043606827]http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9172511&type=product&id=1218043606827

So my questions are as follows:

    If you have a P-7805u:
    1) How is the real world performance in all types of games and applications?
    2) How is the build quality? I don't plan on dropping it ofcourse, but my old laptop had TERRIBLE hinges and it eventually caused the screen's bezel to crack and break.
    3) How long have you had it and does it still perform as expected?
    4) If you have owned it for a while now, how is the plastic and other components holding up?

If you don't have the P-7805u:
    1) What do you recommend for some moderate to heavy gaming, photoshop and flash production, and a decent multi-tasker for under or around $1500?

Thanks for all your help guys... I could not find a collaboration like this using the search function, but if these questions have been asked, please point me in the right direction. :)

Also, what warranty, if any, is included with the purchase of this laptop? I am very concerned about this purchase lasting, not due to advances in hardware, but due to the build quality and durability of the laptop case itself.

Welcome. There are many proud owners of the 7805u on this board.

    1. Performance is great. 4Gig of DDR3 RAM coupled with a 9800M GTS 1Gig dedicated DDR3 GPU is going to give you pretty damn good performance for at leat 2 years (max to medium settings that is) CPu could be "better" but guess what???You can easily swap it out for another if necessary! Not many laptop haves this benefit.

    2. Build quality so far has not been an issue with this laptop. Built rather sleek and durable. Fingerprint magnetic is my only complaint

    3. Ive had mine only a few months with no issues right out of the box..stock GPU drivers and all..Plays the latest games at max settings at native res flawlessly..CPU's never get above 55 degrees and GPU has never reached higher than 85 degrees with no cooler..cooling system seems to do its job.

About the warranty, you can get warranty through best buy but I did not as I did a lot of research and was confident about this model before buying..but to each his own (an issue I read was about light leakage and dead pixels but I guess this can be an issue with ANY laptop you buy)

I have the 7801 variation same exact thing but has a 1920x1200 screen ;P so far so good I've had mine for about 2months (bought from tigerdirect) runs cool only problem i have is a little bit of warping above my touch pad but that's most likely due to my raid-0 lol. games are flawless I have Adobe master collection c4 installed and photoshop runs with out a hitch. also there are several upgrades available, cpu, bluetooth, 2nd hard drive and a blu-ray drive if wanted. If you do buy the 7805u i hope you get one with the better screen :)

    If you have a P-7805u:
    1) How is the real world performance in all types of games and applications?
Performance is awesome. I play combat arms(FPS) on all settings high and get well over 80-100fps haha.

    2) How is the build quality?
The screen's bezel is extremely sturdy, oops haha I messed with my lid and it went into hibernate mode lol. It has excellent external build quality, keyboard is comfortable and touchpad works as it should. The only problem I have is the the right part of the palmrest gets warm from the HD. The CPU in mine is of awesome quality. I was able to fully undervolt it and I average low to mid 30 C.

    3) How long have you had it and does it still perform as expected?
I've had the laptop for about a week, purchased as a Tigerdirect Refurb for $750.

    4) If you have owned it for a while now, how is the plastic and other components holding up?
    Everything is solid :p.

I managed to get the 1920x1200 AUO the screen is beautifl with only slight backlight bleed. I could careless :D

I appreciate all the help guys. It seems like an AMAZING laptop.

I have another question though - has anyone found any information or rumors hinting at a new model that is going to replace the P-7805u anytime soon? I would hate to buy it and see it be retired the next day. I know that is the way the technology world works, but I would like to try to avoid it if possible :)

    Thanks again!

You mean a new Gateway FX model? There's the Gateway FX P7808... I doubt you'll want to pay 1800 for it though. Just just the P7805u with no regrets... you can turn around and sell it on Ebay and get a new one :p.

Yeah, I know of the 7808.. I was referring to a new model that would replace the 7805 at the same price point. :)

Has anyone ordered a P-7805u from the Bestbuy website? What type of warranty comes with the machine, if any?

In terms of warranty, ordering from the bestbuy website or walking in the store makes no difference..? There is a 30 day warranty (I think) from gateway and unless you buy the stupid priced warranty thru best buy (something like $99 for 1 yr mechanical components only)(or really get raped in the husker by spending $299 oup to $500 for no questions asked) I personally treat mine like a baby and no liquid/beverage ever goes around it so I opted out all warranty. Best buy gives you 14 days to bring the laptop back and get a refund should you not like it but there is a 15% restocking fee. My advise, dont get sold on the BS and take care of your laptop...Theres just something wrong to me about spending 1/4-1/3 amount of money that you spend on the laptop....on a warranty

My gullible sister went in to best buy with out me and bought a $500 Hp and walked out with a reciept for $980...talk about gettin sold....some people ; (

If you have the money for a brand new gaming laptop, you'd probably better off with a Sager NP8662. I think the smarter, but riskier choice would be a refurbished computer. You can avoid a good $80 or so on taxes, and the $400 price difference is often worth the small troubles.

If you like to play it safe, buy a new one. If you want to take some calculated risks, buy 1 or 2 refurbs :D

the warranty, at lease as a new machine, is 1 year parts and labor from Gateway. Personally I am extreemly carefull with all of my electronics. I have found primarilly that extended warranties are a waste of money.

They do have their place though in say households where damaged equipment is the norm. Even where the equipment faces adverse exposure to weather or other conditions.
