So, I've noticed this on the 2 6831s I had before exchanging for the newer 6860s...

If you press the power button to turn the system on, and then shut the lid right away... after a few seconds the laptop will simply shut itself off again.... but if you press the power button and wait until around the memory check on the boot screen and then shut the lid, the laptop will stay on and continue to boot.

Can anyone tell me why this is?... is it normal and made to do this... or is it a bug in either the 8800GTS BIOS or main PC BIOS?

Also, if it's not a bug... can I change this setting so that it doesn't do that???

I use my laptop at work alot and on my old one I would turn it on and then shut the lid right away to allow it to boot... that way if I get called away before it loads I have less of a chance to forget to shut the lid for privacy and battery life. It's just a habbit thing I guess.

    thanks,
    TK.

does anyone know why it does it though? I assume it's BIOS or Video BIOS related since it happens soooo early in the bootup.

Mostly I just want to know if it's designed that way and why... and if not, is it a bug of some kind?

    really?...

with the laptop turned off (can be plugged in or on battery)... open the lid, press the power button and then close the lid right away... it doesn't shut itself off after about 30secs?

I have two 6860s and they both shut off like this... also at least one of my previous 6831s did this as well.

If yours really doesn't do this... are you willing/able to list both your BIOS version and video BIOS version???

    Thanks.

I noticed this also, I use mine with a 22" monitor, external keyboard and mouse, and if i try to turn it on and close the lid right away, it will repeatably reboot until I open it for the first 5 secs or so on boot up??

any thoughts as to why this is going on?... are you willing to ask your Gateway people about and see if it's something that can be "corrected"?

thanks and please do ask them... I'm very curious if it's a known issue or if it's fixable. It's not a super important as it doesn't effect performace or anything... it's just annoying, lol.
