First of all can I do a RAID 0 setup on my 7815u? I noticed there was a spot for two hard drives.
Second. I already have the stock 5400 rpm 500gb HDD. I want to add another and put it into RAID 0 for speed. If I add another 5400 rpm opposed to two 7200 rpm in RAID 0, will it make that much of a difference?
I'd rather not buy two 7200rpm's opposed to 1 5400 rpm (to add to the one I already have)
Let me make this clear. I don't care that adding another HDD adds more weight, give me less battery time, or creates more heat. I play my laptop plugged in anyways, with a cooler, and if you can't carry the thing around cuz you're too weak then don't buy it.
Thanks!

OK someone has to have two hard drives in their gateway FX. Those of you that do, are any of you running RAID at all?????

So here's the deal with RAID 0. RAID 0 increases sequential read and write but your I/O will suffer. Because of this loading times will generally not be faster. People these days are getting SSDs for lightning fast load times.
5400rpm in RAID 0 is fine. 5400rpm drives aren't even necessarily slower than 7200rpm drives, although they usually are. You should look at Tom's Hardware's 2.5" hard drive charts to see how yours compares. Like I said before I/O speed and latency are what matter the most for loading times; for transfer or loading of huge files then Avg read/write matters more. -
I ran raid in 7811 for awhile but started getting some odd behavior pointing to the disks. I broke the raid and reinstalled the OS with no further problem. Bottom line is on desk PC I always had data on a separate drive so didn't care if I lost the raid (which I only lost one due to bios flash). It started making me edgy on the Notebook were I didn't have a safe place for data resident on that system.
Not trying to discourage you. Maybe you have more reasons for raid than I did. It worked fine before the quirkiness started. Never did figure out what caused it.
RAID 0 on my 7815u - does 5400rpm or 7200rpm matter?
