Hi, I just purchased a Gateway 7426GX and I noticed that Gateway says the RAM is upgradeable only to 1.5 GB. I assume this means adding a 512 MB stick to the notebook in addition to the 1 GB already there. (or is it 2 x 512 MB?)
My question is what would happen if you put a 1 GB stick in instead of a 512 MB stick? Would it still work? I want to get as much RAM in as possible, but of course I don't want to just buy a 1 GB stick and find out it doesn't work.

AFAIK, it has 2 x 512MB installed (one accessible, the other inaccessible unless you don't mind voiding your warranty). So to upgrade, you will have to throw out one 512 chip and replace it with a 1GB one. If it's compatible memory it will work fine.

you need to get a single stick of 1 gig, and replace one of the existing 512 sticks in order to get the most. Unfortunately, I did see that we cannot move up to 2 gigs
according to the Gateway site. I would just LOVE to get 2 gigs in this rig too. IF you do try to add 2 gigs via 2x 1 gig sticks, can you keep us posted on how it went? Cheers.

I might consider it if I get a good price for RAM.
Some of the guys over at "the other notebook discussion board" said that one slot is user-accessible and one isn't, however, they have had success with Best Buy taking their notebook (for a fee of course) and replacing the non-user-accessible slot too, provided you provide the RAM.

Hey Beam, i found out that we CAN upgrade the ram to 2 gigs, the only reason that gateway states we can only go up to 1.5 gigs is that the our 7426GX's have 2 of the 512 sticks installed, and only ONE of those is acesible via the bay. In order to upgrade the other slot, the laptop actually has to be dissasembled by a tech (bestbuy can do it for 70 bucks + the price of the ram). So there you have it, there IS hope indeed. Cheers! BTW if YOU try to dissasemble it yourself in order to get to the hard to reach slot, it will void the warranty

Im dissapointed that I actually have to replace the ram. That means I have to go through the trouble of selling the old memory lol. On the other hand the expanding to 2gb sounds **** nice. I do audio production and need all I can get.
Ok some questions about my 7426GX.
Will the chipset support SODIMM DDR400 and run it at that speed if I replace both SODIMM modules with 1.0GB DDR400 modules? The current DDR speed is 333. Also, is it possible to go higher than 2GB total?
Does anyone know the origional generic model name and manufacturer for the 7426GX so I can go about learning every little in and out of my laptop?
Also, does anyone have any other detailed specs such as motherboard information, chipset, individual manufacturers for the motherboard and other items in this system?
Id appreciate any info you can provide on all of my questions. Thanks to everyone in advance.
