these new drives are annoying. I thought it was vista, but I made a dual boot with XP (FANTASTIC package help here BTW awesome job) it seems like its the drive. My older drive in my destop (not that old) has no issue, but the drive in this 7811fx won't play region free discs, (or something like that). I wonder if it even causes problems playing home-authored discs?
solution?--HOLY CRAP u mean I just have to use device manage to select united states (using 1 of 5 allowed assignments)?? I would
think the preinstalled VISTA, or my installed xp would have done this
during setup (those screen that prompt u). it seems to work better now, but not done testing..

just copy the content of that DVD to your HD and watch it from there or buy an external DVD and convert it to the region u want it to be. Thats what I did ;) Have my external DVD on region 2 so I can watch my movies from europe or japan.

well it worked when I set the region. I'm just surpised that in order to play a region-free dvd in a new laptop you have to go to device manager and set the region for the optical drive. why does it play commercial dvds without doing this? had me all confused (easy to do). I mean, when it would play commericial and not backups, UNTIL I set ther region? The backups where region free so it makes not sense in that respect to me. I set the region but
the disc it wouldnt play were region-free. go figure.
I guess its normal for the region to not be set? i expect in when I put in a drive myself but not in a prebuilt system.
