As the title describes, i've been experiencing some random shutdowns on my 7805u where the screen will go blank (ie. turn off, not go black screen like a gfx driver crash) but all the lights (power/media bar/wireless) still remain on. Only way to get my notebook to boot up again is to perform a hard reset during which time I am informed that windows did not shut down properly.

I'm virus/spyware free. Running Win7 64-bit. Any suggestions or advice to resolve this annoying issue would be most welcome.

    Cheers

Are you overclocking? What are you current temps? Have you tried different drivers? Are you sure its not the inverter on the lcd backlight thats not going out(if you hold the paned at any angle to a light can you make out any output on the display)?

it's not an inverter problem. Screen actually turns off.

I am OCing but have tested all my OCs @ their respective voltages which are stable.

Ok so this happens while using it or when unattended?

when the ntoebook is in use; the shutdown occurs regardless of the load placed on the CPU, whether it be playing a game/watching TV/Office editing etc.

When watching TV or the game does sound continue or is there a hard lock along with the black screen? If the sound goes out does it lock at the same time as the screen?

If you overclock the video it could be that while you have tested it as safe in games before it could no longer be safe. I have seen nVidia chips do ths where all of a sudden they will randomly just cut out. This is especially true if you are running your clocks close to the performance edge.

Something to try is system restore to a point before the issue.........

if by "hard locK", you mean "crash", then no; my 7805u doesnt do that. The notebook literally justs turns itself off but all the lights still remain on.

Havent tried a system restore. I'll give that a go and see what happens.

With sudden shutdown like this I first think PSU (lights still on is odd). But it still could be PSU problem, insufficient power to keep the OS happy but enough to run the lights. I assume you are running with the battery in so power should not be a problem. If both PSU and battery are having problems this could be an issue. Try without battery and see what happens.

Have you checked the error logs? A driver conflict can do this but I've only had it once.

If the CPU rails power drops below acceptable this can be a issue. Other power demands grom the GPU and else where could be over stressing with the PSU or power board causing the cut outs. Since this happens in just web surfing from what you've said try stock clocking the GPU. Now a new driver could just be pushing the hardware that much harder that it is causing power issues too.

This is why I never run at the bleeding edge. Even a small drvier improvement can be the death of the system. If you always back off 5%-10% you have a safety margin. This si why I am most comfortable 5% down on the video clocks and at default just running 3.2 GHz on thee X9100.

Now the brick itself can be an issue pulling all the power from it. If you find this to be the case I highly recomend the Targus 180w. I've had mine for over 2 years and it has been working flawlessly..............

battery is not plugged in; my 7805u essentially lives on my desk and is hardly moved around. this occurrence happens without the battery attached.

bad RAM or incorrectly sitted RAM would have the same effect (random shutdown), right?
