When I get over the awe of this computer and my work for the day I'm going to hack that Fn key to be the Ctrl key and the current Ctrl key to the Fn.
Cause it's a bloody pain in the ***...
-
-
Good luck with that. There's plenty here that would love to see it happen, but nobody has been successful.
-
Oh I'll get it (yeah so that's optimistic) ! Just need this work to finish itself... Look for an update on this page later today.
edit: after a little more research I'm a little sadder. Seems like this may or may not be possible. **** "Fn" key seems to be hardware interpreted. -
Finally..
I would have to agree.. I've missed many crouch kills on 1.6 to feel comfortable with the layout yet. -
-
Dammit.. Got my hopes up too..
Oh well, just have to get adjusted I guess.
The biggest problem I have is the right shift key is way to **** small for my fingers. -
I use a ZBoard fang with my 7811 so not a big deal while gaming.
-
between that and the brown lettering, someone should be fired from the laptop design team. I've gone to CTRL-C and CTRl-V too many times, only to get squat.
-
Also I'm down with the hate for the tiny shift key on the right side. Anyone who has done much typing knows that the size of the shift keys and enter key are by far two of the most important things in good keyboard layout. Having those keys, which you use constantly, be too small slows typing way down and makes manipulating the keyboard much more fussy and error prone.
If anyone can figure out a way to remap or get rid of the function key, I'd love to hear it somewhere down the line. Like immediately. -
apparently they did it so that the key would be closer to your hand so you don't have to stretch your pinky. sort of backfired because everyone is used to its old place.
for those looking for an alternative crouch key, I use Caps lock -

Unfortunately there isn't a way to change the keys with out rewiring the keyboard, or maybe a firmware update. I've tried every other way possible, from remapping software to editing the registry that controls the keyboard function.
The FN key is a hardware leveling key so not much can be done with it.
Since the FX laptops have 2 (the other one by the arrow keys) you can always remove the FN key so you don't accidentally press it. Your keyboard will look a bit funny, but you can recognize it tactility that way so you don't keep trying to use it instead of the CRTL key -
Well, I consider myself a pretty hardcore gamer. When I use the laptop for gaming I whip out the NXZT notebook cooler and set everything up.
I only use the keyboard for typing. I have a Nostromo N52 gamepad I use for my left hand. You should check it out. Can't move the FN key, but for gaming I like the gamepad. -
-
Completely agree... this is absolutely the thing I dislike the most about the 6860. Having an N52 for gaming is a good idea if you're using it on a desk though.
-
i wonder who was the genius to switch the crl and fn key spot? that thing bugged me when had the 7811
-
i don't have any problems with the keyboard, the right shift doesn't bother me cause i rarely use it.my hands are big enough that i can use the left shift and still hit a key without slowing down.
is the Fn key only a hardware thing on the keyboard? if so couldn't you just try finding another keyboard that fits, if there is one. -

Couldn't agree more regarding the FN/Ctrl swap. I absolutely love my new p7805u, except for one thing... this blasted key swap; I HATE it.
Gateway, note to you guys... please just include a simple swap option in the next BIOS update for all of us unhappy people. I'm ready to dump this thing and go back to a Dell solely because I'm tired of missing keys. I have to look at the keyboard every time I want Ctrl, which is often. Yes, I've given ample time to adjust, it just isn't natural to me. -
do we really have 2 threads complaining about this on the first page now? let it go
-
i don't get what the big deal is, after you use it for a week you get used to it, or i did at least. I have big hands and have no problems with the keyboard, or the orange numbers.
EDIT: just realized this is an old thread, and only read the first page before.
Really Gateway? The FN key in the Ctrl place?
