So I'm rebuilding a FX 7811 that had a drink spilled on it. I've got some new parts and old parts and I cannot get this thing to power up!
Here's the breakdown
I ordered a "new" mobo that came with the small power board and a CPU. * I know this mobo is used but it does provide me more feedback than my old mobo (as in charging indicator on trackpad lights up while on my other it did not)
I ordered a new media panel (power button panel)
I am still using my old trackpad / keyboard / HDD / monitor
I have 3 CPUs to test with (1 i know is good which is my original, 1 which was an upgrade i installed that was in the mobo when the burnout drink spill happened, and the 3rd that arrived on the mobo.)
I also have 2 sets of ram (og ram and new upgraded ram which was installed during the damage).
I did not change or swap out the other 2 chips that came on the "new" mobo, one or both i assume are the video chips and they are definitely secured to the board and i am not confident enough to try and remove and replace those..
Questions:
Will the laptop boot if it is not fully put back together? Seems like an odd thing that it wouldnt but I've never rebuilt a laptop, only built/rebuilt PC's. Most of my recent testing has been with the mobo on a table and the other pieces connected but separate.
Would all the fans / heatsinks need to be attached to get a boot? I of course would not RUN the computer without those attached but I'm simply looking for signs of life other than a blue charging light and have generally only had 1 fan plugged in as an easy indicator of booting.
Will the laptop boot to BIOS if I do not have a HDD plugged in?
Will the laptop boot if the monitor is not plugged in?
Will the laptop show video on a secondary monitor if the main screen is not plugged in?
How does the computer know when the main screen is open? Is that a switch in the hinge system?
Should the CMOS battery be plugged in or would it still boot without it? (I've had a cmos battery go bad on a PC but its been years and I couldnt remember if it still booted fine or not, i would think it does)
Current Symptoms / Clues:
I can get the computer to imitate booting... When I press the power button it will light up and stay light as if the computer is on. No fans move, no drives spin, I do not think the CPU/Vid chip are getting hot. If I hold the power button for 10s and do a hard shutdown it goes off.
I have tried hooking the computer up to a TV and a Monitor via HDMI and VGA. HDMI produced nothing. VGA on the monitor came up with a "check the video cable" screen which is a direct result of having the laptop plugged in. Without the laptop in my monitor goes instantly to sleep / black. It does this with the main screen cable plugged in or not.
Whats stopping my fans from kicking on? or the drive?
Also, shouldn't this "new" mobo at least boot to BIOS even if the fans/HDD are not plugged in / or not working?
I'm stuck guys.

Any ideas or thoughts?

1.) it will boot to bios without a hdd.
2.) yes all fans have to be plugged in. Most modern MB's if they can not kick the fans hold boot.
3.) there is a micro switch that lets the pc know it is open.
4.) I know with the screen in it will not post to an external monitor, probably would not even with it unplugged from the main board.
5.) try all good DRY chips, pre spill, before you try the ones that could be damaged.
6.) Yes the HS needs attachment. There was a P7808u user that made his board unpostable because he stripped one of the CPU heatsink posts.
hope this helps for starters................. -
This information is incredibly helpful.
Unfortunately I have yet to achieve a post to BIOS. I still have the same symptoms - Whether or not fans/keyb/trackpad are plugged in I can power on the laptop and it will stay lit as if it is "on" yet no fans will kick up (they may be not working) and no screen response.
I'm left with a couple more questions
1) If my fans were damaged / non functioning, would that prevent the boot to BIOS / Screen turn on even if they are plugged into the mobo?
2) the micro switch for the screen, is that located in the monitor and hit via the hinge?
I've been doing all of this testing out of the case because I have been swapping so many parts and such, do you think that could be causing any of the problems? I don't see how but at this point, if its not the possibility of the fans being burned out preventing boot, then I am at a complete loss. -
1.) YES/NO, the reasons can be many. If the fan still shows a load the system may allow a boot but if the load is absent or improper it ma not. Now this all too is assuming the board works as most due needing to see a functioning fan. A bios can be tweaked by the OEM not to need look for them in cases where the systems are fan less etc..
2.) It has been too long, maybe someone else here will remember...........
