I scrubbed my drive to DoD specs using Acronis True Image so that I could downgrade to XP for some proprietary software that I needed to run on this computer (wasn't interested in running virtual system due to decrease in speed).
I installed the XP drivers as listed on the Gateway Support site and created a slipstream install disk using NLite, but was not able to get all the devices working. I gave up and went back into the box to use the recovery disk, and found out that the disk with the Gateway logo inside the box was merely an operating system disc.
I tried to reinstall Vista and loaded all the Vista drivers, but am having a problem there as well. I have made sure that I loaded a 32 bit version of Vista and am using 32 bit Vista drivers, but can't get access to the internet via wireless or wire as it cannot find the network controller driver. I have tried to uninstall and/or disable things to see if there was a device conflict, which has all led to negative results. Upon re-boot, I get a found new hardware wizard for the network controller, which it then can't find the driver.
Gateway tech support won't help because its a refurbished system, and Seneca Data Systems tech support will only say that its a driver that's not on the Gateway support site and refers me back to Gateway. System information shows this as the problem Network Controller: PNP Device ID: PCI\Ven_168C&DEV_002A&SUBYS_E006105B&REV_01\4&36D44CBD&0&00E1
I'm at my wit's end, so I thought I would try to find someone with a recovery disk for the same system.

Yes, you have to burn O/S recovery disks and driver disk before wiping this laptop. It is the Gateway Recovery Management selection under Programs.
I have the same version laptop, just purchased in February for my wife. I would also prefer to be running XP Pro for various reasons, but it is taking some time finding drivers. So far, I need to find the NIC driver, the Atheros wireless driver and the Optiarc DVD driver. Gateway support is useless, I won't be buying anything else from them.
If need be, I will continue with Vista but purchase a non-OEM version rather than the trashy and bloated version they provide.
I'm guessing you could use a copy of the Driver disk?
