So I got my replacement GPU fan in the mail today, and would really like to immediately get this fixed, as I haven't been able to play any games for a couple months.

I've checked on some disassembly guides, but I'd like a clear answer on something before I begin: To get to the GPU fan, remove it, and replace it, do I need to apply any thermal paste to anything?

From the guides, I can't tell if it's required to remove the heat sink from CPU, and I haven't seen any clear photos of the GPU. I'm not going to make any guesses on my baby.

For the GPU, I've seen mention of a "Pad" that's just stuck on there, as opposed to a heat sink stuck on with paste. I'd like to get the thermal paste replaced, but I'll have to wait at least a week for payday before I can shop for Good paste.

Thanks in advance for any advice! I'm jonesing for Witcher 2 right now.

You dont HAVE to take the heatsink's off.. but do it anyways. Trust me.. you'll want to. It will lower the heat and it will take a bit longer but it will be worth it. Get ICD 7 as well. Use that and you'll be set.

    Ok, great!
    Thanks for the quick reply.

I'll get the fan on, and then next weekend find the one decent computer shop for some thermal, reopen and get this thing running cool. perhaps then start researching overclocking...

use throttle stop for the cpu and for the gpu theres a nvidia performance tool you could use. makes it seriously easy.

Finished! That wasn't such a chore now... cough...

Everything is solid, especially this chunk of stuff built up on the CPU fan. The GPU fan just had it all balled up so it couldn't spin. Guess the moral is- clean and clean, even if you're not having any problems.

I think laptop manufacturers need to dedicate a section in the manual on maintenance. A can of compressed air used every 2 weeks is all you need to prevent expensive parts replacements. This single piece of advice would cut forum posts about overheating by a substantial percentage.

I think making maintenance of a laptop easier than a three hour screw hunt, delicate ribbon wire pulling gauntlet would be even better.

It's like playing Operation, except a wrong move leaves you with a $1k paperweight.

I'm definitely going to keep up on spraying dust, though. wait too long, end up spraying dust into little clumps that stop fans from spinning and I'm right back where I was.
