So, I decided to un-mothball my P-171S/P-6831 FX. I get a bit twitchy when I'm not messing with some sort of hardware project, so I was thinking about fixing up the old FX. It had the standard GPU issues and needed a reflow. So I did the heatgun thing, but longer and a bit more even and focused than I think I have before. I distributed a stack of quarters to apply even pressure on all four sides and when reassembling it I used Ceramique 2 on the GPU and memory and VRMs. I also noticed on the opposite side, the memory on that side matched up with raised bits of aluminum on the shield, but they were covered by a rubberish material. I'm not sure if that was designed to conduct heat to the RF shield, but I thought there was no way it could do as good of a job as Ceramique 2, so I cut away the parts that wer where the ram chips are and put the paste on. So far, my GPU has not gone over 62C, even playing Max Payne 3, and it idles around 40C. Those are very good temps from what I remember.
OK.. My next project with it. I have an incoming 7805u motherboard and a new CPU. My new CPU is a P8435 SLAQD. OK, I know.. it's a hella hot chip. I had read some mis-information that let me to believe the SLAQD was the one I wanted, but it was in fact the SLGEA or even the P8335, but as I said, it is already incoming, and it was pretty cheap. I know I definately have to undervolt the new CPU, and I suppose I can do that with RMclock, however, I was recently looking into a modded BIOS for this, and other features. Problem is, every file I come across is a dead link. Does anyone have unlocked or feature added BIOS files for the 6831 and 7805? I want to practice first on the 6831 if I can get the 7805 working nicely. I'm also thinking about getting a reballed GTX260m for the 7805 as it has 1GB of DDR3 already and upgrade the 9800 GTS. I know there are 2 flavors of the 260m and I have my eye on one that is the G92b. Anyway, If someone can come up with the BIOS stuff, that would be swell, and if anyone has other comments on this, that would be great too.
