I am using a windows xp media center oem disc to go ahead to the past and get rid of vista.
When XP setup gets the the optional partition page,In the lower half of the page where the hdd model #etc. is displayed it is replaced with :<UNKOWN DISC>
(there is no disc in this drive). I talked to gateway support and was emailed the links to the Intel SATA/Mass Storage Controller driver I burned that onto a disc and tried f6 at setup. Eventually we arrive at a screen that says setup coud not determine the type of one or more mass stroage devices installed blah balh. Setup will load support for the following mass stor dev : <none>
Finally at last effort I tried slippstreaming the driver/drivers using nLite including the chipset drivers using the pnp option and not text for drivers but still get the same messages. but the way the bios is junk imo there is no option for sata controller in it.

    any ideas are invited, :)

Don't over complicate things, you NEED the sata drivers, the chipset can be installed after XP.. slipstream the sata drivers onto the XP cd, or put the SATA drivers on a floppy disk and use a USB floppy drive, or put the SATA drivers on a usb flash drive and load the drivers from that when you get prompted to press F6 to load additional drivers.

You need to select text-mode drivers when slipstreaming the sata drivers..

Your bios also has to be configured correctly (If the above doesn't work I'd check that next).

I don't know what textmode driver to use. I tried adding the entire folder
onto the usb flash drive and will slipstream using textmode but I dont know
what option to use there are two options and about 12 sub files within it.

    any suggestions.

If I check mobo maker would I be able to determine what file to use then?

You select all of the drivers.

    Which other option?

When I setup slipstreaming using nLite my choices are iaahci or iastor <(don't know what either means) which selecting either one, my choices appear to remain the same. However I am ignorant and nervous because @ the bottom of the Driver Integration Options dialogue box "Be careful if your er even needs more that one. Don't select different OS versions. (see pic) http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=bf5ru8&s=5

Would You say it is safe to select all the mobile drivers and ones that make sense ?
I just don't want to select the wrong ones and make my situation worse.

Vista/XP drivers are not interchangeable. It is very rare they will work correctly on BOTH OS.

You can try these realtek ones (If you have gigabit lan): http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...d=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

    From this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=265740

If you have 10/100 I'm not sure what device it is, the drivers are out there you just have to find out exactly what NIC your laptop has. You can find it by looking up the specs of your laptop. Then just find XP 32-bit (x86) drivers for the device.

got the realtek drivers and they worked. thanks.
the only drivers left in device manager needing
to be updated are the video controller.
do you know if vista 32 bit works for it ?

Use XP 32 bit drivers for the video card. Do it the same way, find out the specs of the laptop and it will list the Video device. Then, download and install the drivers for that device.

Trying vista drivers on XP is a waste of time, 99% of the time they will not work. Even if they do work, they might not work correctly.

Find and download the correct drivers.
