I followed the nstructions on this page http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=1599947 using the NX860XL format (which is basically the same computer). Everything installs fine (XP sees the SATA drive) but when Windows boots, I get a BSOD error. I burned about 10 CDs and still get the same BSOD everytime Windows first boots up.

Anyone know what this problem could be? I'm currently using Gateway's XP Home Edition.

I'm not sure what the problem would be. The only difference I can think of is that I am running XP Pro but not sure why that would be an issue. Can you see what the error code is on the BSOD?

It's some generic error "If this is the first time you've seen this error, etc, etc".

Doesn't really explain the error or what's causing it.

Figured out what was causing it. I had a USB hub plugged in into the laptop which had several peripherals on it, so the XP installation probably didn't have the proper drivers and gave me a BSOD everytime it booted up. I unplugged the hub from the laptop and Windows booted up fine.

    Yes, I know, I'm an idiot. :)

I won't go into details of all the stupid things I've done. Great that it worked for you. Now there's two of us.

Are you having problems with the CPU temp stuck on a certain temperature? NHC doesn't show it and I've used another temp program and it showed that both CPUs are 25C. Is that correct? Both cores will equal 40C, yes? I'm not sure how it works with dual cores.

I've used Mobilemeter. It just lists one CPU but I've seen the temp get to 64C. So it definately isn't sitting at 25C. I suspect the program you are using doesn't look at the right register for the temps. If there is a better monitoring program someone let us know. Mostly I monitor my GFX temps with Rivatuner.

On the XP install were you able to get the gateway chipset drivers to install or did you need to get them from intel?

I downloaded Coretemp and it showed around 25C idle on both CPUs and 50C at full load on both. I replaced the thermal grease and pads with Artic Silver 5, by the way. My 7900GS is 65C while gaming and 45C idle.

I just got Core Temp. It works great.
I should put on some arctic silver but have been hesitant to pop the thing open. I've seen the 7800 get up to 94C. Needless to say at that temp things start to stutter and you would burn your lap. As long as I raise the back 1/4" temps stay below 80C and stay smooth. Idle is 55 C.
