Ah the infamous SP2 has hit my auto update and is asking to install.

Ive done some reading but cant find good info on benefits/glitches of SP2 thus far. FYI this is for Vista 64. Thought I would post in the gateway section to see how all my dogs with 7805 are feeling about this new service pack. Pro's/Con's Please! Im edging towards NOT installing as SP1 has given me NO issues thus far!

    It's really that simple.

Besides Blu-ray and Bluetooth support, Vista SP2 also:

    * Fixes Wi-Fi issues when Vista awakes from sleep mode.

    * Improves performance of Vista desktop sidebar gadget, allowing for RSS feeds to perform better.

    * Address overall Vista system performance issues. Microsoft says SP2 repairs nearly 700 nagging Vista bugs and security updates.

    * Boosts power management efficiency by 10 percent.

    * Gives your computer support for VIA Technologies' new 64-bit CPU

    * Lets your system support exFAT, which can handle larger files and can also use UTC timestamps so you can synchronize files across different time zones

    •Built-in Hyper-V hypervisor
    •Event logging support in SPC
•Fixes for DRM issues from WMP upgrades
•Windows Vista Feature Pack for Wireless
•Functionality to reduce resources required for sidebar gadgets
•Improved power settings for Windows Server 2008

    The complete list of features:

    Emerging Hardware Support

•SP2 contains Blue tooth 2.1 feature pack supporting the most recent specification for Blue tooth technology
•Ability to record data on Blu-Ray media,
•Adds Windows Connect Now (WCN) Wi-Fi Configuration to Windows Vista SP2,
•exFAT file system now supports UTC timestamps, which enables correct file synchronization across time zones.
•SP2 provides support for new form factors, such as ICCD/CCID. new form factor support –example USB form factor as opposed to PCMCIA).
•Support for the new VIA 64-bit CPU
    Security

•SP2 includes all previously released security updates, and builds on the proven security benefits of Windows Vista
•Secure Development Lifecycle process updates, where we identify the root cause of each security bulletin and improve our internal tools to eliminate code patterns that could lead to future vulnerabilities
    •Reliability
•SP2 addresses previously released reliability updates, as well as addressing crashes, caused by Microsoft code, discovered since the launch of SP1
    Performance

•Resume performance when Wi-Fi connection is no longer available after resume from sleep
•Inclusion of Windows Search 4 for improved indexing performance, improved relevancy in search, broader indexing scenario inclusion, as well as new Group Policy integration for Windows Search,
•Improvements to the RSS feeds sidebar gadget to improve update performance and responsiveness
    Application Compatibility

•It is our goal that applications that run on the Windows Vista Operating System today and are written using public APIs will continue to work as designed on Windows Vista SP2.
•Previously released Application Compatibility updates are included in Windows Vista SP2.
•Spysweeper and ZoneAlarm now working with POP3 email accounts
    Administration and Support Improvements

•Customers installing .net framework 3.5 service pack 1 will notice shorter download and installation times with Vista service pack 2 or Windows 2008 service pack 2 already installed,
•Service Pack Clean up tool (Compcln.exe): This tool helps restore the hard disk space by permanently deleting the previous versions of the files (RTM & SP1) that are being serviced by Service Pack 2.
•Single installer for both Vista & Server 2008
•Ability to detect an incompatible driver and block service pack installation or warn users of any loss of functionality
•Better error handling and providing more descriptive error messages where possible
•Better manageability through logging in system event log
•Componentization for Serviceability of the installer
    Some Specific Fixes/Additions Include:

    •Inclusion of Hyper-V
    •Event logging support in SPC
•DNS Server now listens over ISATAP address
•Fixes DRM issues from WMP upgrades
•Windows Vista Feature Pack for Wireless
•Reduction of resources required for sidebar gadgets
    •Improved power settings for WS08

This one sucks, hopefully you can still uninstall Search 4.0 after installing SP2: •Inclusion of Windows Search 4 for improved indexing performance, improved relevancy in search, broader indexing scenario inclusion, as well as new Group Policy integration for Windows Search,

Guys i've posted this in another thread too .... after installing sp2 my free space on c drive went up from 75gb to 105 gb ..... 30gb of junk(unnecessary or outdated for sure with sp2) files deleted. That is a real gain indeed

Thanks..looks like you can not uninstall SP1 or SP2 if you run that disk cleanup...any reason why one would want to uninstall SP1 and SP2? Will updating to SP2 change the settings I currently have? Currently I have all the Vista 64 tweaks done and have SP1 running nice and fast and want to keep the settings that way. Will SP2 alter my current setup?

Im just weary because when I bought the 7805u it did not come with an OS Vista CD and to date, I am unable to burn backup discs via my Gateway Recovery Managment...SO if something goes wrong with installing SP2...im screwed!!!

What I posted is for removing prerelease of Sp2 (Sp2 Rc1) that people had the option to download before the real Sp2 and all the Sp1 files still left on the computer. As long as you have your settings set up in the final Sp2 you should be good. I wouldnt worry just make sure its real and from MS.

You would need the option to uninstall it if SP2 screwed up the compatibility with Vista and certain programs/drivers. I'm sure there are other reasons also, but that is probably the most common reason.

If you really want to install SP2 and you're really that worried, and you can't use ANY of the other backup methods (There's plenty of other backup software.....), you can always get a 2nd hard drive and clone the one you're using now. If something goes wrong, just put the other hard drive in and you're back where you were before. Obviously you will have to buy another hard drive, but with the proper cloning software (Good cloning software is available for free) it will be an easy and reliable backup.

Just thought I should post a comment on SP2. I am running Vista x64 Home Pro on my p-7801u. As always I was a little apprehensive about putting a service pack on. In past experiences, system performance always takes a hit after a service pack update.

Well... I am please to say (and very surprised as well) that after installing Vista SP2, my system is actually running faster. Everything seems to be just a little bit 'snappier' in response.

Thought you might like to know.

Hmmm with hearing that SP2 deletes off 30 gig of SP1 useless files and frees up that space, and runs faster, and wont change my current settings/vista tweaks...i think ima do it..i think ima do it

The space that SP2 clears varies between users, so don't count on 30Gb. Then again, you could get 50Gb like I've heard some people get back. A lot get 5Gb or so.
