    I have a 6518GZ and whenever you unplug it from the wall the screen goes to half brightness. Is there a way to keep the screen at full brightness while using the battery?

    Yes, just change preset in the power settings. I dont know about that Gateway computer, but it should be at the bottom right of your toolbar, if not try the "Power Options" in control panel. If it's not there, then it must be set up old school and you have to get into Bios to set it. My old Toshiba was like that.

    We get this post like every other week and it's still my favorite. You can actually just use the FN key with teh appropriate F key to turn up the brightness. It will remember a different setting for battery and for AC power.

    Actually the replies are not quite true. I have the 6518GZ and with the bios set to auto dim it does not remember my bright settings, it always drops the LCD to the lowest brightness level, which is fine with me, I just up it accordingly depending on my needs at the time. I tried turning the auto dim option off but it just kep the LCD at the brightness I had it set to when plugged in, seems to be one way or the other. I have had other laptops (IBM, HP, Dell) and they all seem to remember their repsective brightness modes accordingly. Ah well, always something! :gateway:

    Actually, it's in the BIOS. There's an option under "Power" called "Auto Dim". Set that to off. Note that this will greatly and adversly affect your battery life.

    What on earth is an FN key... from a dimly lit gateway laptop user...

    FN= Fuction Key
    Its usaly between your Ctrl key and your Alt key in the bottom left hand corner of your keyboard. It is usaly a different color too, matching the same color as your F keys at the top of your keyboard numbered F1 through F12.
