I just went to Gateway's website and decided to customize an M250 for kicks, which is a 14" notebook with 1280 x 768 resolution. Besides having the option for choosing a standard matte or glossy screen, they also had an option to pick a 12.1" screen with 1280 x 800 resolution for $30 more. I haven't seen this option offered on the HP DV1000 or Toshiba M50 series for example, both 14" notebook as well.

Will choosing the 12.1" screen just put an ugly bezel around the 14" screen to make the 12.1" screen fit??

You can see it in their official spec sheet here,

Coulbe a mistake. 12" screen would have better battery life.

Well, the 12.1" screen option is offered when you configure this notebook plus its right on their spec sheet, I don't think its a mistake. Its pretty interesting how Gateway is doing this, Toshiba and HP haven't done this with their 14" notebooks.
