Anybody running an momentus xt ? Really want an SSD, but the price per gb is crazy still. So I need a drive and I am looking at the 500GB Momentus Xt Hybrid

I have one on my M11X, it loads quicker, and seems to add a snappyness to the system. You can pick one up for around $100.00 now, get to a raid them
-
I dont think raid works with the nand
I think when you strip them it turns the nand off.
So in that case get two hitachi 75k00 and save some money.
I would say it makes you boot faster but other than that it seems to be exactly like the wd black and hitachi 75koo but much better than seagates own 7200.4 -
No it does not turn the nand off with Raid. It makes you boot faster and if you are limited in the total apps it will also enhance app launching and if raid0 with 8GB ssd it is a bit more forgiving with launching pps as it tends to hold more.
-
oooooo I have never read that it holds 8 gb of nand thenThat actually makes it really good.
My laptop doesnt support raid 0 in any case so I cannot comment. I have a single xt and have never gotten it to load applications faster. It reduces my boot time by 10 seconds. -
by combining the drives you double the size and speed of everything to a point. You also then have the stripe limitations and CPU overhead too. CPU overhead is the primary reason I gave it up.
You also double the Ram cache to 64mb and platters too 1TB so it really makes sence.
Because of the Stripe the resources are treated a bit different. When a file is 5KB of data is only requires 8KB, or 2x4KB, of data on the drive platters or SSD cache. with a 128KB stripe the same data occupies 64KB data chunks of the platters and cache. with the stripe the data is stored in these 128KB data sets and therefore multiplications of size too.
so 8GB SSD cache at 128KB stripe doesn't quite do what a 8GB SSD cache would do with just 4KB data sets. Now there is a cure for the size but it has its issue.
The drive stores data in 512 Byte blocks so a 4KB format uses 8 blocks normally. Now if you Stripe at 4KB, 2KB data chunks, and format at 4KB the drive is using 4 blocks per drive for the 4KB sector. To the OS it then stores all data the same format as a single drive and the drives do not lose any storage efficiency. Now for the one issue with this.
With ICH9 or ICH10 Raid proccesing is done by the CPU as it is a hybrid hardware raid controler. I found that at full tilt the CPU, (P9600) would get by 30% usage on a sequential write. Also the drive array would cap at 150 MBS in benchmarks..............
Edit; this is an extreemly simplified explination.......................... -
So the xt is supposed to learn the most often used programs. Is there a way to reset this? Does it always keep updating the 6gb memory? Because on a fresh install of os, most used programs won't be the most used programs after the lappy is configured.
-
What exactly are you saying? Do or dont raid the xt? Oh and what driver are you using in your P-78** for your 9800m gts. Me (260.99) How about what software your using to overclock it.
-
Correct, when you do the install or a major defrag the SSD cache unlearns the sectors it was previously caching. As you use the system it will relearn in 3-5 reuses of the files. So after a few reboots and program launches you are back to having your cache optimized..............
-
260.99 here too, I use the nVidia tools to OC the card............. -
Tan I have the SD23 firmware for the XT. Do you have the SD24 update. If so, did you notice anything different?
-
My XT's is in the U81-a and LT3103, I have them both on SD23 and haven't upgraded yet.............
-
I'm downloading nVIDIA System Tools 6.02. I'm sure I had this before and it had no settings to change clock speeds. Do you have to flash the gpu? Unlock it? If so with what and how? Thanks Tan.
-
Nope, works fine all stock................
