Alright so my local Bestbuy has two left... and I really want this laptop. The thing is, it is regular price (1349) which is still a great deal, but I get the feeling the price will drop right after I buy it. Since laptops have 90 days before they are completely cleared out of the system, they generally try to drop the price on them enough to get rid of them.
What I am afraid of is that there will be none left by that time.
Should I just get it? Or are there better deals on any new models coming out?
Also any tips on how to maybe get a better deal at Bestbuy (things to say to a manager) or anything else I should know.
Thanks!

it`s you choice, you must decide, but i think its a great price for that notebook!

I'd move on it, if i were you. I was in your position and just missed the best buy sale on these laptops. I could have kicked myself. But then I found someone local to me selling it for about the same price and couldn't be happier. Go with what you need and will enjoy now. There will always be something bigger and badder coming out. If you can hold off, great. Me, i love me some 8000GTS graphics

As for the 90 day clearance, I don't know about that. The P-6831FX came out in January, then early March almost all stores had no stock. In these forums their were a few confirmations that the P-6831FX would be discontinued, thankfully the P-6831FX is no long in discontinued status and many stores have them in stock.
Best buy will price match if it goes on sale within 2 weeks. Buy it Sunday and if it happens to not be on sale that week you still have 2 more chances to check the weekly ads and see if it will be on sale for a price match.
Also sign up for best buy rewards. For every 250 points earned (1 point = 1 dollar spent) best buy will give $5 bucks toward your next purchase. Signing up is free. So thats an extra $25 dollars for you to spend after you buy the laptop.
Other options are to wait and hope it goes on sale again. Wait until the laptop shows up in the bestbuy.com outlet center. Or you can always wait until the announcement of it being discontinued, again, and see how much off the manager can give you on the display model.
I say, if your into PC games to buy it now or on Sunday -
Thanks for the advice guys... I really like this laptop and have decided to go ahead and buy it.
I've heard stories of people getting managers to cut them deals on the laptop since it "discontinued"
Do you have any advice as to how to go about it when trying to get them to cut me a deal? I don't really want to buy a floor model though.
Thanks! -
Dave, I would still get the P171 Sfx from gateway, you can get it for $1399 if you negotiate with the rep, and they are now shipping, so theres no more long wait.
Much better PC for $50 more... -

Is it easy to get the deal for 1400 from Gateway? If it is going to take several hours and different sales reps I will probably pass.... but if they are very willing to do it then I might try that. (The Processor is definitely better)
What are some things to say to them to get the discount... or should I just ask straight away?
Thanks a bunch for your help thus far everyone -
I would try at least a couple of reps if you don't it right off the bat, you can do it online through chat (which I always find easier to play hardball on), But I would just cut right to the chase and say that you are interested in the SFX, you know it has been sold for 1300-1400, and that unless you get that deal, you are going to go with the Best Buy version. I would be money that you will get a rep at $1399 with a max of 3 tries...It is definetely worth it in my opinion for the processor, slot load dvd and finger print reader....also don't know if you are financining at all, but you can get 6 months no interest from gateway versus only 3 from BB...

Tried once, she said she could only take off $100 (makes it $1499)
I tried a few more times but kept getting the same Sales Rep.
Will try again tonight... thanks guys for the help. -
was it kaycee by chance?
If you check the Long thread on the Shipping wait in this forum there are a couple good reps to try, Rico and Roman come to mind... -
It was courtney, she was nice... just couldn't offer me a great deal or anything.
I'm waiting a while.... she emailed me and said stop trying to get a different Rep because they will all say the same thing.
She threatened to IP ban me if I kept trying. LOL -
Lol...thats too funny
I wish you luck though, either way

I was able to get $100 off the P-6831FX new in box, with tax included it was 1349.36. Since it is not "discontinued" anymore, I would probably recommend to speak with a knowledgeable Best Buy employee who knows that a updated machine will be coming out soon. Then it'll probably be up to the manager who will authorize the discount.
When the sales person spoke to the manager, the manager let me get the P-6831FX with a $100 discount. However, this was when it was discontinued and showed that there wasn't anymore coming in. It'll probably be hard to get them to give you a discount now until it becomes clearance when the new update laptop comes out.
As for getting a good price from Gateway, I did it by phone. They will usually ask for a name and a phone. I believe it is the phone number they tie you with to the rep. If you have a work number, cell phone, etc. You can give them one and you'll be tied in to that one. If you reject it, you can call again. If you get the same person (which I haven't), just ask for technical support and they'll start to transfer you in which you can just hang up.
Some of the reps WILL try to start with they might tell you that they'll give you a discount if you buy their three year plan and then give you an additional discount if you also buy their accidental protection. Make sure that you calculate the price otherwise they blindside you by that. One of the reps tried to do that and I found that I was only getting a 3% discount! Needless to say I knew when I was being suckered.
Of course, this is how they make their money, and I do understand that they make commission off of this as well as this is their livelyhood. I feel that if they are sincerely giving you a good price you should go for it!
You can probably get a rep to go 10% - 15% for one of the FX models, but the 20% discount will probably be impossible since the pre-orders are done and they're shipping. -
I emailed Rico this week he said their limited to 10% now.
It would be nice to get the Penryn, from factory.
But they don't ship to Canada, so I will have to wait and see if bestbuy get's something new.
Should I grab it? A P6831FX question
