Been a fan of the P-7801u for quite a while now but I've never had the money to buy a laptop for myself. After the P-79XXu series came out, I became pretty excited and told myself I would get myself one once I had the money.

Well I have the money, but Gateway no longer manufactures the 79XX series. This most likely means they will be coming out with an updated version of the P-series (Possibly UXGA with a decent resolution screen and illuminated keyboard?).

Pretty obvious as to where I'm going with this. Should I wait or should I buy? Does anyone have any info on the future of the P-series?

Just my .02 worth. Seeing as I was in your situation once upon a time. :)

When Gateway phased out the 7800 series and moved to the 7900 series, I believe the gap was a few months. Just my opinion, but I thought the 7900 series was kind of a letdown.

That being said, I would like to think that Gateway will release their next series with i5 or i7 processors. What the graphics card will be is anyone's guess.

I ended up going the Asus route because for what I was looking for, the Asus suited my needs. If there is something on the market currently that fits your budget, I say go for it. It's unknown how long it will be before Gateway releases their new machines. Not to mention, I would like to think that the current hardware on the market that Gateway will put into their next laptops is already available in other models, for either the same price of the Gateway or cheaper.

Not to mention, in the interim you'll probably drive yourself nuts waiting for the Gateway to show up while you could have been enjoying one of the current machines on the market.

Just a quick question; Would an i5 or i7 REALLY make that much of a difference in terms of FPS? I mean, I'm not hard core gamer. Sure, I'll play some games to an extent but I'm not completely obsessed over getting the highest FPS possible and whatnot.

Games that rely heavily on CPU would benefit.

After going through several back and forths, I settled on the Asus G72 from Best Buy. Currently it is $999. It basically has the same specs as the current 7900 series (miuns the DDR3 on the GW versus DDR2 on the ASUS) but the ASUS has a few more features than the Gateway.

Yes, it is not a i5/i7. But for $999 it is a pretty good "bang for the buck". Not to mention cheaper than the 7915 BB sells.

Here it is if you are interested:

If you're looking for a computer that will be similar to gateway's eventual next line look at the Toshiba Qosmio line.
