    has happened now?

Where's Dook? What's this "Dook incident" I keep reading about?

And Gateway appears to have given up the budget pricing on their power laptops, and aren't even calling them FX anymore?

Man, you miss too much when you leave for any period of time :(

Yeah gateways went a bit mad on the new laptop... but you know bigger numbers seem cooler to computer people so they will still sell them.

Unfortunately the x305 is now about the best lappy deal for entry level stuff...
to bad its ugly as sin (but it does have a nice sound system in it  )

That'll learn you to take vacations now wont it! :p

Maybe the new spin Dook has added to this drama is true, maybe it is not, I do not know.

What does not add up to me is this:
You see, I've been in the hospital a little over 3 weeks now

The FS thread for the "Dook Machine" was created on 10/15. The Real Dook posted the above comment on 11/12. Okay lets assume "a little over 3 weeks" accounts for all those days.

So if Dook's story is true, we have to assume his roommate made that for sale thread after Dook was hospitilized.

But even after 10/15, the account "Dook" was active on NBR (up till 10/21): http://forum.notebookreview.com/search.php?searchid=3346976. So Dook's roommate did not just pose as Dook to sell his machine, but continue his role by actively participatin on NBR making similar sarcastic-type comments as Dook?

Also, if the FS thread was made on 10/15, and Dook posted on 11/12 that he has been in the hospital for in between 3-4 weeks, Dook's roommate must have hatched out this scheme and implemented it successfully within days of Dook being hospitalized (maybe even hours?). The way Dook described it (stole all my passwords, took money out of my bank account, sold it to 4 people, etc.), this scheme would of taken some time to plan out. What was his roommate just waiting for Dook to get into an accident?

I understand the afflicted parties are trying to work it out and I hope they do get it worked out, but if I was one of them I would suspect something else is up.

EDIT: One last thing. I may be out on a limb here, but I always associated purchasing a service such as "lifelock" with people who were very paranoid or have a lot to lose (money, etc.), not someone who is "very trusting" and someone who lives with a roommate (assuming for $$$ purposes).

lifelock is just credit protection. nothing more. It won't allow someone to add any credit accounts to your bureau without first clearing via secret questions, codes, and such with a live person employed by lifelock. It doesn't protect you outside of that.

Trusting, sure.. sending personal info across the internet, lifelock can't hurt. I'm not leaning one way or another, but I feel there is still more story to be told.

    I know what lifelock is.

I wasn't associating lifelock with dealings on the internet. I was merely trying to describe the type of people that I would expect to have lifelock, and Dook just does not seem to be one them - the biggest point being if you live with a roommate, do you really have spare cash that you will be willing to spend on something like lifelock? Some may, but I doubt most do.

I don't know what lifelock charges, but it has to be cheaper than half your rent money. :) But seriously, I don't see how the two correlate. I have had my credit card numbers lifted a couple of times and my wife has had her purse stolen. That experience would tend to make someone want to buy lifelock. But we never got to put a face to our villians. That still didn't keep us from trusting people we interacted with on a daily basis.

My brother had a roommate that was using his computer for over a month without my brother knowing about it, even posing as my brother in ICQ (this was the beginning of how my brother found out someone else was using his computer). That was a freaky situation, but at least it was discovered before any serious damage was done.

You think the password on your laptop somehow makes it secure? I replaced my 200GB drive with a couple of 320GB drives, did a fresh install of Vista, then plopped the old drive into a USB enclosure and even though my username on the old Vista install was different than my username on the new install, I had no problem copying favorites and even cookies from the old harddrive to my new one, and when I brought up this forum the first time on the new install, since the cookie was there, I was already logged in. Dude, that's freaking scary. A lot of people would be shocked to see what data is contained in plain text in cookie files.

I'm not saying Dook (or who we think of as Dook) is an innocent victim, but my experiences in life lead me to believe that his story or something close to his side of the story is quite plausible. That doesn't make it true. But it shouldn't be summarily discounted.

Unless certain specific forum members decide to speak up, I doubt we'll have a conclusion to the story, or additional evidence on way or another.

Schemes and plans? I think you are giving criminals (Dook or otherwise) WAY too much credit. If it was the roommate, all it would take is him being a dishonest person, and seizing an opportunity to mess with things. I mean, one you are on the computer, its not really hard to wreck havok.

Now, I am not saying he is innocent, but I think you are giving too much credit as a whole "scheme"..

If I was about to throw away my life for what $10k, I would at least scheme a bit...

According to Dook the guy is on the run, more or less.

I never discounted his story, nor did I accept it. I merely pointed out what wasn't making sense for me.

Anyway, I dont see why we are even having this discussion. Dang, I should not have posted...another thread on this topic is a bit too much.
