Sound from my laptop coming in waves

My laptop seems to be doing something weird with its audio. When I listen to music, the sound seems to get slightly louder, then slightly quieter, over and over. The speakers on the FX series aren't that impressive so I never really paid much attention until I hooked up my desktop speakers and they did the same thing. I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with my ears; the music from my ipod dock sounds just fine.

Does anyone know what may be causing this?

Check under your sound properties to make sure the "Loudness Equalization" box isn't checked.

Plug in a pair of headphones, see if that's happening with it too.

Well, I moved my computer and it stopped. I've moved it around the last 2 days to see if it would come back and so far it hasn't. If it does I'll follow all of your suggestions and let you know if they work.

    Thanks!

I think I know what your problem was. I ran into the same problem when I move my computer into a different room. The touchpad volume control started going crazy. My volume would randomly lower to 0, or go all the way up to max (which is painful when you got headphones on). So you might also have some problems with that volume control.

I am wondering also, is there any way to shut that volume touchpad off?
